We get our boy back tomorrow. He has been on loan for 4 months and ended up with bone spavin.( in one hock) So we get him back

) The loaner was really good but has changed his feed. So can I pick your beians please?

He is a cob, rising 11 and a very good doer he has:
2 feeds a day
Sugar beet
2 scoops safe and sound
2 tablespoons soya oil
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons rosehip & seaweed herbs.
and add lib hay

I am thinking that now he has had the second injection in his hock two weeks ago and is being ridden every other day for approx one hour. I don't feel that he is getting a proper supplement for his joints. also perhaps too much food.

Also he has had no grazing for the 4 months, only out in a yard for a couple of hours a day.

He will be turned out 24/7 with shelter.

Could you help me please?
Thank you
Mandy
So could you help mw=e with the feed

I would suggest you ask your vet for cortaflex HA and feed instead of the herbs etc. Good doer should be fine on the safe and sound with hay. We had a horse with spavin and we were told to keep working him every day. He was fine and returned to jumping after a couple of months.

If he is turned out on good/average pasture Id say 2 feeds a day on top of it is excessive! Cobs often can survive on fresh air!
For his joints something like cortaflex often does a stonking job!

if you dont want to shell out that amount of money, then just average cod liver oil/omega 3/chondroitin combos are good (but obv not quite as good as something like cortaflex which is formulated to do a good job)
To give this supplement you obv need to give a little bit of hard feed to put it on. So halving the feed he is on would be more than sufficient (obv dont just stop it straight away!)
What is he on rosehip and seaweed for? what is that supposed the do?

Maybe rather than sugerbeet you could use something like speedibeet which has a lower sugar content?

Overall good pasture provides a horse with all the nutrients etc that it needs, however obv with joint problems we need to give the supplements so id say just minimal hardfeed to put this on would be enough (esp if add lib hay is being giving as well!)

hope this helps some!

ditto what has been said above, my good doer cob is on 1scoop alfalfa split into 2 feeds & good quality hay/grass with a GP supplement & is doing very well.

joint supplement wise i would recommend aviform suppleaze gold. Its worked on all my lot who have needed it, its well priced & they always have 3for2 offer on their website. It also comes highly recommended by several other HHO users. My friend use to use cortaflex but has since changed to suppleaze with noticable results in a short space of time. Personally iv never been keen on cortaflex after reading the ingredients/concentrations & found suppleaze better value for money. But each to there own & i no people who swear by cortaflex & it works for their horse.

Agree with the above about less feed and plenty of exercise. I too am not impressed with Cortaflex unless you get the more pure type. NAF Superflex is supposed to be pretty good and supposedly has more pure ingredients. The better one is Synequin available from the vets, I look after a mare who has spavin in both hocks and she has definitely improved with this. Its expensive though, although you may be able to get some via your Insurance co if you have a claim going through. Speak to your vet and see what they advise.
