Your yards/stables - can I see some pics?

Finally putting the application in for my new stables (hubby has been busy planning a second free range hen unit for another 16000 hens - that's 32000 now! so has been a bit busy...).

We've agreed on a 20ft x40ft building which will have a single run of three boxes, 10ft wide, 12ft deep with a 15ft feed room/tack room at the end. This will give me an 8ft covered walkway in front of the stables.

My OH is building it himself - he's good like that- and was worried that the weather may be too harsh in winter, so he's going to fit ventilated roller shutters that I can pull down in bad weather to turn it in to an American barn.

Has anyone else used these? I have seen them used in cattle housing but not in equine.

Does anyone have any pics of their yards? I'd love to see what you have done, and any advice you have! Thanks
 
Here's a couple of mine. Ours are in a dutch style barn and are open at the front, but just across from the stables are some other farm buildings, so it's pretty sheltered.

We have a run of 4, then a tack/feed area and another two stables.

we have a barn with 6 stables across from each other and about 8foot between with.roller shutters at each end. the shutters are brill in bad weather or if.the flies are bad
 
Hi,we have an Anerican barn and the main entrance at one end has double wooden barn doors (which we rarely open)and a 15ft approx wide electric roller shutter. It is ventilated,so that when down,the middle third lets a good breeze in. Takes a little while for them to get used to the noise but ours don't bat an eyelid now. The wooden doors next to it are in case of a power cut. We also have another double door at other end,as an extra fire escape/to let a through draught through the whole building. We have had a hole drilled into the floor,which has a screw in hook that fits in it-when the shutter is down,it can be padlocked to the hook. Only downside to shutter is (if your hubby can't maintain it) any elec roller shutter companies charge a totally ridiculous amount to come out-fortunately I have a handy bro-in-law(and we've only ever had one prob with it,which he fixed in 5mins.) Shutter also has a safety limiter on it,which makes it stop if there is a solid object obstructing it.

Good to hear that you have had success with roller shutters -we'll definitely be installing them now.
 
we used rolling wooden door instead of vertical shutters, same result but no electric needed!

It has 4 stables (2 12x12, 1 8x12 and 1 16x12 plus a tack room. Plus wide central gangways and front apron yard (now fenced with rails as well as the 'Stonehenge posts :-))

There are windows in the exterior half doors so if I have to shut them in really awful weather (we are in Cairngorms!) they can still see out (as well as their interior stable doors of course).

Absolutely love it. All the advantages of a barn but not remotely dark gloomy or dusty. Warm in winter (we insulated the walls as we get -20) and cool in summer.

Ours was by Saltire stables.
 
Lauchlanandmarcus - your new stables are lovely and the roller door is a great idea - only thing is for ours it would need to cover the whole front of the stables - about 30ft in total, hence going for the roller shutters!

Badgermyers - yours is the sort of layout I would have had if I could choose, but I have sacrificed the L-shape layout for a bigger all weather turnout paddock in front of the stables - it's just a case of making the best use of the available space I suppose! We'll be putting a Shetland size door on one of them for my daughter's mini Shetland that will be joining us when they are finished.

Just wish they were up now - and bet my mare does too, after last night's deluge!
 
Yes I like my little set up. I would like to add more stables at some point for when I start buying and selling and having breakers and sellers.

Menage is going behind and walker at the other end of the menage (eventually)

Just all takes time and money!

I'm playing with stable layouts atm as I want to get my planning in asap. We already have permission for 150m2 buildings and a 20x40 arena which was existing when we bought the property but I need to change it so it will work for me. I have 6acres so am hoping for 4stables, tackroom and hayshed with an overhang/shelter behind and then another large run-in shelter across the fence line of two fields. I need them to live out as much as possible but would like the stables for the really bad weather.
It's so hard to make a final decision before submitting the application. I don't have any photos to show but am enjoying seeing yours.
