Hard! Lots of competition! I remember that an eventer once said that the pressure of being on a British Team was as nothing compared to a Pony Club one - rather tongue in cheek, I reckon!

You would have to be coming up with good consistent results for any team at the appropriate level.

At Pony Club the team trainer would ask you to go for training and then they would select the team. Not forgetting whose parent is on the committee and who has forked out for a super-duper eventer for their child.
I know one team turned up with their assortment of ponies and their jaws dropped as they looked at the horses coming off lorries for the other teams.

Riding Club would be easier probably as fewer riders would be at the required level, although often pros are in the Riding Club teams - not Badminton riders but those who maybe run their own yard and compete at BE standard regularly.

It depends what sort of level you're aiming for. Do you mean international teams or competing for your local pony / riding club in area / national competitions?

As chair of my local riding club we never deny anyone the opportunity to compete on behalf of the club but that might be as an individual if the numbers don't add up (teams are made up of 4 riders) and riders pay their entry fees. We've been pretty successful over the years and make it to many BRC national championships but have only ever won one team championship (we've had a fair few individual wins) as the competition there is so strong.

Even at that level it's pretty expensive - and that's on top of keeping and training your horse.

What level are you competing at at the moment?

The answer is it is hard - you need a good horse, talent, hard work and a big dollop of luck

Obviously in the future it’s my dream to be on international teams but for the moment I mean National competitions and pony club teams and pony club championships teams

There are various options depending on age and level. If you are school age, NSEA is very good. Schools can enter as many teams as they like in each qualifier, plus you can ride as an individual. So you are guaranteed a chance to try and qualify for the National Championships and/or the various regional compeitions. It's £20 to join tor the year so very affordable and you can compete dressage, SJ, AE and JwS. From 70cm upwards.

Then there are Pony Club competitions. Talk to your own branch of PC to see opportunities but in our local club they were always looking for people to make up teams so just getting on a team was no problem. If you do well then you can be selected for Pony Club Championship events.

If you are under 18 you can aim for the BE U18s teams at BE90/BE100 Much more expensive as you need to be a full member and ride in the qualifiers as you need 2 double clears in qualifying competitions to be eligible for selection.
