Poor max has a blood filled tick behind his ear. I found the lump, pushed the hair away, queried what it was to myself before I saw its ruddy legs wiggling around, ugh :vomiting smiley:

So I'm going to have dinner then remove it, I'm favouring tweezers, but is there a better way? I got reasonably good at removing them from the oh when we lived in aus, but a few I broke the heads off, which I really don't want to do.

What do you do with your dogs if they get them?

Ugh, feel all nasty and tickly now :(

Bet max does feel great either!

U really need a tick remover, if u can I would leave it till u can get one tomorrow, all pet shops/feed stores should do them, they r only a couple of quid. Our BC used to get loads, removed them with tick remover but occasionally missed one which I would find when vacuuming after it had fallen off. They didn't bother me until I got one! Yuck yuck yuck

Get a new dog.

:D no seriously, I have a little tick puller which is great but otherwise just pull it out carefully, don't twist and be careful not to dig your nails into it as this can make the head come off.

I agree a tick remover is cheap and the best way to remove them.

However as you don't have one then I have used two corn on the cob skewers, use them carefully in a pincer movement and twist. You will probably need someone to hold your dog to keep them as still as possible.

I use something called Tick Off, which comes as a spray or drops. I use drops as Charlie is a wuss re sprays. Just put a couple of drops on the nastie beggar, it will kill it and then they relax their jaws and drop off. I prefer it to tweezers etc as no risk of leaving the head in.

Sadly being un domesticated it don't have corn on the cob skewers either :o

Will it be ok to wait til tmrw? I now feel that my house is infested, yack!

Proper tick remover gizmos are definitely the best thing as they don't leave the teeth / head behind but failing that, smear the offending parasite with Vaseline and it will suffocate and drop off in its own good time.

I've done well so far and not found any beasties, despite the fact one of the fields I walk through now has seriously long grass.

I use this thing = http://www.otom.com/how-to-remove-a-tick and it is the easiest way of removing ticks that I have ever known [i am not affiliated with the company haha]. So well worth buying for future ticks.

I have tried Vaseline and found it hasn't worked at all , although that was on a lamb so perhaps wasn't reaching skin enough. x

I don't trust Vaseline either. Will take a trip to PaH today and get a tick remover.

Going to have to clean the house this evening!

Hmm, tick remover thing took a few goes and I'm not sure it all came out. Was very full and pink though and can't have been comfortable. I sprayed Milton on it afterwards to disinfect (which thinking about it I could have hibiscrubbed, but hopefully it's similar stuff) so I'll see tmrw if there's any bits left in still, I think there is a reasonable hole.

I read somewhere to put them in alcohol to kill them before getting rid, and I didn't have anything neat to hand, so I'm hoping some 2 week old Pinot will do the trick :D

Please, please don't ever do that! If you smother it in anything, it's far more likely to regurgitate into the dog thereby passing on any diseases eg Lymes. Remove with a tick remover.

I used Listerine. Took a couple of days but it just dropped off and was totally dead! It was right on his eyelid. Dex is a rotty and does not like to be messed with either!

Always use a tick remover, or if you have nails like me, you can use them in the same way...without putting any pressure on the tick.

I always lay a piece of kitchen towel on the floor and once removed, I place them on that. They go towards heat, so I like to mess with them a bit before flushing them...I put a finger on one corner and wait for it to almost get there, then move to opposite corner and put my finger there. They go nuts looking for my finger...little beggars...it's also a good way to check they have come out intact :)

Oh....and yes, I am a little bit odd :)

my recent ones have come off Frank - I think playing with them on some kitchen roll in the yard might make me seem a bit odd...

... oh ;)

I've always been far too repulsed to put them out with my nails/tweezers, hence the need to find a good tick-pen. I don't even like touching the outside of them.

..the next drama was getting rid of it [wrapping it up in duct tape and putting in bin;)]

I have always had great sucess with rolling them round and round under my thumb and they drop off of their own accord. Just put your thumb or finger over the top of the tick and roll it gently in a circle until it lets go, don't know why it works but it has never failed yet.

My father once set fire to a load of ticks he got off the dog, unfortunately he put them in a plastic bowl and then set fire to them with a match on the kitchen table, it didn't do the lino table cloth much good, he was in disgrace for weeks about that!

Was rather relieved to see the "oh" there, lol ;)

In the bin??? I could never squish one so that would mean it would be alive in the bin and I couldn't handle that. Down the loo for me, wrapped in kitchen towel. GONE!

I think it's the same principal as turning the tick removers 3 rotations...it's what I do with my nails if I don't have the remover to hand. It just works, they just kind of let go. If it works, don't knock it :)

Hmm, well I think the head may remain unfortunately, will keep an eye on it and see what happens. I couldn't play with it, yuck, it's little legs gave me the creeps!

It's what the remover recommended so it's what I did :) Just layered it up so that the tape resembled a marble, then in the outside/black bin. Eeek it'd be alive in the toilet, I'd end up worrying it'd attach itself to my bottom! :o

but you're an ecologist :p don't they all do creepy crawlies!

Past tense, I'm now an agri/ engineering student ;) I've removed enough, but I think the tick in my house along with baby who goes on carpet freaked me out! Really need to sort out my slug issue too, I basically live in a pit! :(
