Just found two ticks on my dog whats the best way to get them off? i dont have a a tick removing tool but will be getting one for next time.

you can smoother them in vaseline and they eventually drop off and they suffocate. do you have any frontline? this kills them within 24 hours. it is now available to buy in pet shops and supermarkets as it is not longer a POM (precription only medicine). DO NOT try pulling it off with anything such as tweezers. the heads get left in under the dogs skin and can cause an infection. the other thing you could try is spraying surgical spirit on the site (we use that in practice so im not sure its something you would have a home really). i'd go with frontline or vaseline.

There are lots of folk tales about the best way to remove ticks but the only really failsafe way is with a tick remover otherwise you risk leaving the mouthparts in and causing an infection. Can you get one tomorrow?

dont use any other kind of spirit though! just the surgical spirit (not that im suggesting your dim, just need to say it from a professional point of view!)

vaseline does work, it just takes time. its not an old wives tail

Sorry! Saw your post the second I'd posted mine. I did ask at my vets about the vaseline thing the last time this query was posted and they said don't use anything other than a tick remover once the dog actually has ticks. Just passing on what they said!

ah no prob! we use tick removers at work cos they are the best thing for removing, we never use vaseline. its just something that works if you dont have a tick remover, or as suggested you can wait until tomorrow and get one. not sure how long vaseline takes to work. frontline can be used but does take 24 hours and even then you sometimes have to pull off the dead ones as they dont always drop!
just realised i spelt 'tail' instead of 'tale' lol

Grasp the body and twist anticlockwise. We have deer ticks here that carry Lymes disease and this is what is recommended in the leaflets that are distributed. It does work.
