We have just taken on loan a lovely little 15yr old Welsh A for my daughter to ride. In the last 4 days I assume she has come into season as she is being very marish - squealing, squirting, displaying, lots of sniffing and licking. Luckily it hasn't seem to have made her grumpy or change her behaviour in any other way. However my problem is that she as she is weeing so much - more or less very time the gelding looks at her(!) she is absolutely drenched in urine down her back legs most of the time and I noticed today that between where her hind legs meet, right up to her vulva(?) is now just looking very yucky and needs something doing other than washing with water which I have done twice so far. What would you recommend to wash with and also as a barrier cream? I really don't want to leave it unprotected now because its going to get very sore but don't want to make it worse by using anything too harsh. And how long can I expect this to go on for?

Any advice greatly appreciated! Have had mares before but this one is a right little foxy lady!!

Have you thought about a supplement to help with these strong seasons? It should only last a few days so when she stops she will be fine again... I would worry if it continues for longer though.

We have a couple of very randy mares at our yard but they only tend to display this behaviour for a few days and then it's back to normal.

Oh god its coming to that time of the year is it? :( I'm dreading it with my new mare. She is too mareish now let alone when in season ... god help us all!!!

I have a mare that started off just like that. She was so bad she could barely walk for stopping and weeing etc. I had the vet who prescribed regumate, we used that until it ran out then used herbal stuff. When that ran out we stopped altogether and after two years we have had no problems since.
I used barrier cream on her legs as the coat started coming off in the end

Having never had a ridden mare in 35 years of keeping horses, I went and bought one recently - whose idea was that then !!

She is a nice enough type but it has been a massive shock to me as to how moody she can be. Pleasant and smiley one day and then a piece out of me the next day. Dragon driving has been mentioned to her on more than one occasion. She has made me cherish my consistent, genuine geldings and in hindsight I am not sure I want a mare.

She is smelly and I regularly wash her her tail and legs with dirty beastie shampoo or similar. OP, my mare also gets sore legs and I have used a smear of muddy marvel barrier cream on her.

Can any of you experienced mare owner/riders point me and the OP in the right direction for a supplement please. I have looked at moody mare etc but would be grateful for any tried and tested experiences you may have.

I still swear we have the same horse, lol. Not convinced i would survive washing her legs though ... i think she would take me head off  Having a mare is an eye opener thats for sure!

My mare is like this!! And she is in season about every 2 weeks throughout the summer... lucky me! It got to the point that she was reversing into the gelding in her field until he mounted her, the dirty madam  Her attitude doesn;t change, and she doesn't get nasty or moody but it really needed to stop.

I started using Oestress last year and it did the trick completely! She has a heaped scoop per day throughout the summer and none in the winter :)

Oh dear my mare is also a complete tart! Thankfully we have not had to see it since I first got her in October but there was an awful lot of squirting and squatting at any horse near her, more so mares than geldings although the only two boys next door were really old or really young so maybe she turned to the ladies! She does have plenty of grumpy times though. I used sensitive baby wipes on her which she was utterly indignant about, was debating some of the women's 'intimate' products you can get in boots like femfresh wash etc. She has a flaxen tail which gets horrendous so I coat that in baby oil as regularly as possible!

Check the size of my mare ( sadly departed ) in the avatar and then heed my warnings! Avoid all places where you can be trapped in a corner! Be extremely careful picking out her back feet - or wear a shower cap! Many's the time I've had an early bath and a trip to the cold tap in the yard.

My poor old dear was a slave to her hormones ( I'm talking about me mare now!) and she'd squeal and whicker, paddle and paw - and quite apart from me - she used to fixate on the most unsuitable partners - Shetlands, little ponies, young stock etc. Though I have no way of knowing her teets suggested to me that she'd bred at least one foal and when she came in season it almost seemed as if she was getting her desires mixed up - finding a new bloke or go looking for the foal - quite heart rending sometimes and frightening at others - she was of a size rarely denied anything!
