He sired one of my boys and I'm just wondering if anyone knew him, or worked with him?Mainly his temperment I'm interested in and anything else anyone knows of! Thankyou
If born 1990, he died in 2003, and sired mostly flat horses
Top-class 2yo/miler, excellent source of high-class 2yos, plenty of them precocious, died 2003, stood in GB Median, bred mostly milers.
He would be Zafonic (USA).
I have not heard any bad news on temperament, it looks as though most of his progeny did not train on beyond three.
Zafonic was leading first season sire in 1997 and was responsible for 25 stakes winners, including the outstanding European juvenile of 1997, Xaar. died in a freak accident in in 2003 in Australia.
If its "The" Zafonic, he was a very impressive winner of the 2000 guineas, and the runner up Barathea went on to win in the Breeders cup thus confirming the form. He was a phenomenal horse, you tube it, he was in a different league.
Didn't know there were other Zafonic's?
Top race horse. Think he was chestnut if my memory serves me right.
He went to Australia for their stud season but fell on a gate before he took up stud duties. You can find a lot of info by googling, fancy you contacting Sir henry, he is "THE man" in Newmarket and a great trainer, as in "one of the greats" of all time

He is genuinely nice man, one of the "old school"I know, I contacted him a few years ago when I bought my horse!! I think the only reason he replied is because I know one of his friends, so blatantly informed him, so he probably felt obliged! Either that or he's genuinely a nice man! He did say he was pleased I had him and that it's good he was being retrained, so that was nice!
I didn't know he fell on a gate, how tragic.
Zafonic was black, could have technically been bay as some are so dark they look black.
They are usually hot headed when that talented, he wasn't just a good miler, he was one of the best, and was a picture to look at.
I was there the day he won the guineas, he blew people away with that performance, it was truely spectacular and i'll never forget the commentator saying he'll have to be a very good horse to win from there when he was last 2 furlongs out, he had an amazing turn of foot and just blew them away.
If ur boys out like him, galloping must be fun lol x
Loved him - very beautiful dark bay colt. He was breathtaking to watch in his wins. He burst in his last race, so they packed him off to stud.
This vid shows you how talented he was in his best races. Listen out for Graham Goode's legendary comment at the end of the Guineas -This is a very good horse, this is Zafonic!
Enjoy!
