ZARA PHILLIPS

[ QUOTE ]
I think Zara HAS proved herself, but I can sort of see why some dont think so. They probably feel she has bought her way into top level eventing, but then this is the case with many riders! And I think the fact that she has so little experience compared to others like Andrew Hoy etc. also makes them pull her down a bit. Although I think that makes it even more amazing what she has achieved. Toytown IS a fabulous horse, I mean he made the XC look easy! But then why shouldn't she have a great horse?

I think some people think unless you work your ass off to get where you are then maybe you dont deserve it? At least thats the idea I can come up with?!

But i don't see HOW people think she bought her way in and yes she does have a good horse but so does everyone that got selected. I mean do people want her to campaign a crap horse in an attempt to prove she can be royal and talented???? of course not - we want medals and she delivers. so everyone bathe in the glory she has brought to BE, such is the sport we might be bottom of the pile next year - then everyone would be sorry they didn't appreciate the good while we had it!!!

I don't think anyone on this thread is 'Zara bashing' at all. So please don't over dramatise this. I get the impression that everyone here is thrilled she won gold and see it as a huge boost to eventing. not one person will argue that they are not a world class COMBINATION. Simply that some of us will see her as a better rider when she gets good consistent results with other horses. And she's young so she's got plenty of years ahead to achieve this.

oh, this unknown girl who has brought on this horse from novice must have worked so hard, let's get behind her and support her etc etc but to me her surname does not change the story - she has still worked hard and funds it herself...in fact i don't see how being royal helps her eventing at all, so give her credit!!

Sometimes the reverse is actually true. It is very hard to live up to peoples expectations when you come from a highly succesful family (im going more the eventing rather than royal background). People send the chances elsewhere because they automatically assume you already have them handed to you on a plate - believe me, it is the story of my life.

think people will always try and bash someone that is successful, horse world can be quite nasty and people cannot feel happy that someone has been successful. seen it before on here with Pippa Funnell. It is a very British fault and is very sad (in the old fashioned sense!).

And that reply is a fair and well explained reply which i understand and agree with. Your previous post however i saw as confusing and not very helpful, hence my reply. Also i quoted the zara bashing, i didnt make it up myself, though i agree with the person who did say that.
I just think we should recognise her good instead of exploring her bad.

I'm using QR here as I don't know who to reply to. However, our last World Champion, Ginny Holgate/Leng/Elliot, someone I think we can all agree was amazingly talented, never had great results at one-day events. She also had the luxury of being able to produce horses for 3 day events and championships, without having to keep owners happy or sell horses to make a living. She said herself sometimes she found it frustrating how poorly she did at one days. Horses do not go on forever, and the rider who can afford not to go out trying to win every time will probably do better to use 1-days to iron out problems rather than fill the diesel tank. Just a point....

Even if ZP/TT do turn out to be a one-hit wonder I think their acheivements should be celebrated for a long time, it's been a while since GB has had such a collection of accolades....

I haven't read the whole post (I was going crossed eyed - see time of posting) and am using quick reply!!

This is MY opinion!
* Zara is a better rider than I will ever be!!
* She has a fantastic relationship with Toytown and has worked her butt off with him!
* She is the first (and I think still the ONLY) member of the Royal Family to be allowed to seek sponsorship. Which in the circumstances is fair, I don't think it would do the crown any favours to actively, wholey support her horses.
* I for one will be remember her wins at Europeans and WEG all my life!!! I find her inspirational!

Lots of people have had her money and connections but have not won European and World championships. Having money and spending millions on horse power does not guarantee a medal never mind two gold ones. There are many examples of this both in eventing and show jumping and come to think about it dressage. Lets just celebrate her success - it doesn't come along that often.

I think you have hit on the cause of most of the anti-Zara comments on here.
