My son has just suggested we breed zebras, quite for what purpose I haven't a clue..(he pointed out we've had alpacas so why not?)
I said I reckoned they had fierce temperaments, but on reflection, perhaps that was being unkind.
Anyone met one?

ps. don't worry, no way am I having a herd of bl****y zebras....

there is someting in this wks HH with some pro rider who has just broken and backed one and has starting riding it out!!! seems according to the little articale it was quite tricky!!!

I could be way of the mark but someone told me that they can carry diseases.

ETA. this was out in africa where the zebras where 110% wild and terrified of horses. Im sure the zebras in zoos etc are screened or jabbed or something if they are carriers.

They are very tough, can get over horrific injuries. People eat them, so have meat value, there were zebra on my OH's old farm and that had a lot of snow in the winter. A place in wales has them.

Apparently you want Burchells Zebra they are the cheapest and easist, they cope on the least food etc. If you want to sell them as a novelty get Cape Mountain Zebra as they are a bit rare. OH could put you in touch with someone who sells them.

I once got locked in The Mountain Zebra Game Park

Friend of a friend has 1 as a field companion for her horse bought it from abroad paid about 5k for it! he is lovely if a bit stubborn and opinionated, would imagine there is a fair market for them but could be very wrong!

I can't find it at the mo but I have seen an old (1910-ish I think) photo of the founder of Whipsnade Zoo driving a zebra or pair of zebras.
