Zenyatta to Remain in Training

Zenyatta who won the Breeders Cup and was then retired will now return to the track after impressing in workouts. Major turn around by connections not sure if I think it is the right thing to do or not. Will be great to see her race again and win but I do like the idea of a racehorse going out unbeaten at the top of their game.
 
What a shame :-(I don't like to see them ask too much out of racehorses as there often seems to come a point where they inevitably break or have a tragic ending:( There is only so much that you can ask. This mare had a super career and had more than proven herself.

How is returning her to racing more greedy than sending her to stud to have lots of foals? She would probably be more profitable as a brood mare.

I can't see what the problem is they have obviously let her choose! Since she is showing enthusiasm for her work and clearly still enjoying herself they are letting her stay in training and it's not as if she is a 10 year old. Not only that but life as a TB broodmare is far from retirement and carries it's own risks.
 
Umm so you are saying this horse has actually chosen to go back to racing rather than being a brood mare....

I still say it's greed - give me another good reason for her to be put back on the track again? Yes she could be a broodmare and pop out a few foals but they won't necessarily bring in big money - we all know breeding can be a risky business. I just think it's a shame really. She retired in good shape, why take the risk of racing her again.

Zenyatta is 6. How may big-purse races do you think are open to 6 year-old mares? One of her foals could easily be worth several hundred thousand pounds, if not more. How do you think that compares to prize money, assuming of course that she continues to win.
Greed is certainly a very poor motivation for putting her back on the track IMO

Oh, I don't think there's any doubt that her foals will bring in mega-bucks, but yes, breeding IS a risky business.
 
she's enjoying her work- they are going to keep working her.

what is the problem with that?

would anyone have a problem with a 6yro horse in any other discipline not being retired?

weren't there some people on here who thought it was disappointing Sea The Stars didn't contest more races?

you can't please everyone but if the horse is happy, enjoying the work (and still fast!) i really can't see a problem.

The Moss' are great people and have had immense racing luck not only with Zenyatta but with the 2005 Derby winner Giacomo. I think the reality is they are a racing operation and not a breeding operation like the Magnier's, Al Maktoum, Farish's et al - if they have a good horse who is healthy and racing well, why shouldn't they enjoy it? I am sure they are planning either taking on RA and following her around the country until the two go head to head, or Duabi - both will be equally as exciting.

For me personally I was sad to learn she will race again - the colts out here have been IMHO pretty weak since 2006 and all we have really had is the fillies. In 2007 we had Rags in the Belmont which after she never raced, we had Eight Belles who broke down in the Derby it was just great to see her remain unbeaten and so healthy - it really made her a legend something us American racing fans have logged for.

Of course if she gets hurt people will say we told you so, if she goes on to beat Rachel and/or win the DWC people will hail the Moss' decisions and then Ruffian will have to share a page with Zenyatta.

If she wins, she will make some money, but not as much as she would as a broodmare, so nope, I don't believe the motivation for returning her to the track is money. And yes, that is honestly my opinion

The American's make heroes of their horses, flat horses, far more than we ever do in the UK. (not forgetting Dessie, etc). Zenyatta and Rachel Alexander are already legends but can you imagine the scene if / when they do meet on the track. To keep a mare in training longer in the USA is far more commonplace than the UK or Europe.

I just hope with all my heart that a match does not go the way of Ruffian v Foolish Pleasure, or Go For Wand v Bayakoa.

But "Mattress Mack" is still offering a $2,000,000 + purse for a match race between Zenyata and RA at the Sam Houston Race Park so .... it may still happen.
 
The Moss' would race the foal therefore so it would actually be more profitable to race her. As far as a match race - the Moss' would never agree, the risk of Rachel being so far ahead by the time Zenyatta begins her close that she never engages or even sees her is just too big! Distance will be key in the race of both of them, but also how the field runs - Zenyatta needs field to stay close to RA or she might just get too far away.

As much as she can do yes, it’s just the same as with lesser older horses in training, eventers, show jumpers etc, etc, etc, they let them carry on for as long as they have enthusiasm for their work and she clearly has. I am more than sure that if she had not been so enthusiastic she would be on her way to the breeding shed and a life of foal after foal, if she does not encounter birthing or fertility problems.

These are sporting owners who wholeheartedly support racing and she herself is a rather splendid example of her heritage of 400 odd years of breeding specifically for this purpose!! And she is VERY good at it. It is unlikely that she will reproduce herself as a broodmare as unlike a stallion she will have limited opportunity to do so but she has a lovely pedigree being mildly inbred 4x5 upon Nashua, Hail to Reason and Hoist the Flag and is Northern Dancer free!!! All her progeny would have been in high demand and I am talking millions were they ever to make the sales and not be retained by her enthusiastic owners.
 
How many times has JM said Zenyatta will never "this that and t'other" then low and behold there she is running in a race she "was never going to be aimed at". Several times.

Also remember Zenyatta never ran until the Nov of her 3yr old season.
