Zips for leather boots

I left a pair of boots into my saddler as they were just new and one of the zips broke. By the time I had posted them back it would have been cheaper to get them fixed, or so I thought. Saddler handed them back to me and said "send them back, I'd have to charge you £40 for new zips!"
I am going to take them to a shoemenders though, as I think it was my fault the zips broke and they might be a bit cheaper!
Just a case of call into the local saddlery and ask

If they aren't very old return them to the shop. Hubby is getting his fixed for free by mountain horse. I got my boots exchanged as the zips broke so soon.

If they are fairly old, you could call the manufacturer and see how much it will cost to get them to do them. Mountain horse replace them for about £30. You may be able to get them done cheaper though so just use this as your back up plan.

Some local cobblers will do them but not many, and they can take a long time. Worth asking around though as this will be the cheapest and most convenient method.

If you can't find a local cobbler and your saddler can't do them cheaper than the manufacturer then there is a company in Chesterfield that do this sort of thing, they will work by mail order and I think it is about £25 if they replace the zip, less if they can repair it. They are called Feet First and they have a website. They don't advertise that they do riding boots just rock climbing, hiking and motorbiking boots but they do, and they do a good job. They repaired my mountain horse boots, resoled my show boots and repaired some split stitching on hubby's boots.

Have I misread or are they traditional boots with no zip at all at the moment? My saddler advised me to have mine stretched rather than put zips in as it would ruin the boots.
