Thanks x

I did it at Edinburgh - was very interesting but not particularly helpful for getting a job! I graduated in 2007 and out of a class of 70, about 10 of us have jobs in science! Most courses start off very general and you don't have to choose to specialise until the end of third year (or second I suppose in England?) PM me if you want more details!

I did biology @ bristol but the way it was run and what i choose module wise it could have been classed as zoo.

Trouble is it leaves you with lots of options, you are qual to do lots of things but not specifically qual to do anything.

so if you know what you want to do after do something more specific if you want to leave your options open do something like zoo.

I would say I think the more applied courses are better (mine wasnt) and I think if you want to work in science then sandwich courses are a great idea and know several people who have gotten jobs in the company of their sandwich placements.

My advice re getting the job after might be to consider a sandwich course (so you get work experience) or to try asap to fix yourself up with a job ( now if poss, even if voluntary ) that you can continue in the holidays which gives you work experience in the right sort of area you want to end up working in, or with useful experience that would help a future employer choose 'you' as opposed to the other 90 people applying. I hear a lot of employers want experience as sooo many people are leaving uni with a degree it'd be helpful to have job references available for when you apply for Big Career Jobs at the end.

Dubsie.. Yeah thankyou

I do voluntary work experience at a 'horspital' in holidays starting christmas, I no its not the ideal voluntary work experience for zoology but its a start! x

There is a few zoologists on my MSc Environmental Studies course. They did it knowing they wouldn't be too likely to get a job in zoology but to give them an undergraduate that they progress to a post grad in a related subject - and THEN get a job in something else eg Marine protection etc.

I started off doing Zoology at Bristol then got sick of people asking if I was going to be a zookeeper, plus I hated all the behaviour stuff. I switched to biology at the end of my second year, and now, 8 years after graduating, I run my own ecological consultancy firm, which is good fun.

TBH, anything like zoology and biology will leave you knowing a little bit about a lot of things and not a lot about any one thing, so you'll need to either start at the v bottom or do further study to get a job and work up the career ladder - I did an MSc, but know people who did vocational training etc.

Forgot to add! On a slightly lighter note: a Zoology degree is very useful for random pub quiz knowledge and answering QI questions! (Was just watching it

) And for saying "another thing about that bird/insect/weird mammal is..." when watching David Attenborough programmes! Impressed my OH no end when we started going out - now he just tells me to be quiet
