After all the excitement of Saturday, I woke up feeling pretty tired so Zoom's plaits were a far cry from the neatness of Chertsey show. I got down to the field to find that my 13yo helper had already begun grooming

We set off for Lea Barns and it was already starting to get hot outside. After several u-turns we finally arrived just in time for the first test - Intro A.

Zoom was even more giraffe like than normal, she is much more like an un-exploded bomb on grass so our warm-up was hilarious.

We did the test and got a better score than last time 49.5% (yes, that is actually an improvement!

). However, I was a little disheartened since, although I know we are crap and don't mind coming last, we were 10% lower than the next person in the results

The judges comments were <font color="purple">'a lovely horse who is willing and active but she needs to accept your contact and give to it. At the moment you are trying to be kind and very light but this gives her nothing to work into that she can trust. Keep your contact steady, do not allow so much rein and as long as you don't pull back, she will be more comfortable.' </font>

Zoom has always been a little afraid of her mouth when on the flat and, although she is getting better, if you force the issue she tends to rear. I was giving her even more rein than usual since she was very tense. I see what the judge was saying but I don't know whether she is right since at the moment, picking up more of a contact means a pony who runs hollow with her head in the air. I thought the comments were really nice and helpful though.

Anyhoo......we need all the help we can get so any CC welcome.

On to prelim 7. It was boiling hot and I think by this point the pony was bored of prancing about and was more up for galloping round having fun. It was sooooo hot
tongue.gif
She was slightly more relaxed and her head was less crazy giraffe than the walk trot...............but then we came to canter left........and she just wouldn't do it!
crazy.gif
I came back to trot twice and she kept striking off wrongly so I just carried on in the end on the wrong leg. It is a shame though.....we got 52% and lucky for us there were some people who's horses really played up and we were within 1% of the next two competitors. If we had got canter left we wouldn't have come last.....that is my ultimate goal in dressage
grin.gif
The collectives were higher and the comment was 'perseverance needed to accept contact. Stay on circles'

The beginning is quite alot of waiting for the bell.

As I was leaving the arena, the judge stopped me and said she was sorry but basically we were a bit crap so she had to give us bad marks
grin.gif
I think she was worried that I thought we were good!

At first I felt like she was discouraging us from coming again until Zoom is better at dressage
frown.gif
............and maybe she's right, but I just like going for the fun of it and Zoom likes to get out and about. I caught up with her later and had a chat about Zoom's history though and she was then much more encouraging and said we should come along to the next one. It's hard when people haven't seen where you've come from. A couple of the other competitors overheard and were really lovely and complimentary.

All in all I am really pleased with my girl. She tries sooo hard and I know we'll get there..............even if it takes 10 years

I have had very similar experiences with my ex racer, my ambition is to not be last EVERY time and get over 60% by the end of the year! My instructor has said that the judge is only seeing you and judging you on your 4 minutes in front of them, so they can't be expected to know or appreciate the journey to get there. I keep going out as at the beginning of the year the horsebox would be rocking with his kicking and he would go round like a giraffe. He now stands quietly in the box, and will occasionally take a contact and look almost nice (at least in the warm up!)

Keep going, only you know how much progress you have made and she is a lovely little mare. The circles thing is not such a bad comment, it really does work. Keep niggling and keep hands quiet as soon as the contact is taken so they get the idea of reward, in my experience they only want an easy life and if the only easy option is to do a bit of work they get there, eventually!

Thanks for that. It's lovely to hear other people have had success.......it definately keeps you motivated!

Everyone on HHO has been so encouraging. If it wasn't for all the pep talks on here then Zoom would still be a field ornament with a neck like a banana!

The judge was really nice about Zoom's paces and said that she definately has potential. I do like looking of photos from when I got her, it shows how far she's come.

I love reading your posts because you are always so positive
smile.gif
I know how disheartening it can be to have a horse that is fussy with its mouth. I had a mare on loan that came to me with sores in her mouth and the result was through evasion her head tossing and jerking had become a habit (understandably) Any slight movement of the bit and she would jerk her head up and down. She came right eventually but unfortunately had to go back to her owner and I now believe has developed the same problem again

Keep going - everything will click eventually. You know your horse

Well done, I think you both look fab. Your horsie is sooo lovely. I would be pleased with those marks, i really would. Anyway you havent seen my horse yet. Im going to the Sept one and am still having difficulties with straight lines !!!!!! omg my stomach is churning just thinking about it.
grin.gif

Don't worry Kay, you will be ace I'm sure! You have an excuse any way......your horse is MAHOOSIVE so I'm sure he's not the easiest to manouvre!

Thanks again for the lovely comments. I am lucky since I never had a pony......I didn't even have lessons when I was a kid, just taught myself really so I feel lucky to even own a horse! I think it is easier to be positive when both your horses cost a pound! I do get frustrated sometimes but Zoom is a really nice person and I love her dearly.

I was very suprised by the attitude of some of the showing peeps at Chertsey on Saturday!! Makes me glad one horse has one eye and the other is a pensioner. People get so worked up about not winning........but that's another post!

I think its nice that you go out and about and enjoy yourself! I wouldn't with my ex racer yet as I let what people say upset me too much!!

I notice she wears a nose net, is she a headshaker? I have a seasonal headshaker, he goes nicely on a contact in winter (no net) but really pokes his nose in the summer (when he has the net on) - I wonder if there is any connection?

It's lovely to read your posts as dressage is supposed to be fun, but it is so easy to forget that!

As others have said, it is tough when you have worked with a horse for a while and you know the improvement but the only thing the judge sees is the few minutes in front of her!

You have a lovely position, long legs, straight back and soft hands and Zoom (what a great name!) is so nicely forward going! I imagine you have already tried all this but are there any other bits she might like better? I am not a bitting expert but I would maybe try trial and error just in case there is something out there she likes more. This is what I did with Freddy, but he was even worse as he was both behind the bit and behind the leg!!! (I now have a huge number of 5.5" bits, PM me if you want to try any!!)

Her headshaking definately makes a difference. It will be interesting to see how she progresses over the winter as last year the headshaking went unnoticed as she had other problems with her back, teeth, general craziness so had the summer off.

Thanks for the comments about my position! It is easier to sit up straight with a 36' inside leg! I may take you up on the offer of bits as we tried a few before settling on this happy mouth hanging cheek last year. However, that was when I was just hacking and it was simply a case of finding a bit that gave me brakes and steering but that she wasn't afraid of! Now she has progressed from just jogging and snorting it may be time for a change.

Sounds like you did really well, even if the placings didn't reflect it - Zoom is a lovely little mare and you seem to have done so well with her!

Re your comment about showing - I do think that people get more worked up about their placings in showing than in many other disciplines because so much of it is down to the judge's individual opinion rather than straightforward performance, so one person will look at the winner and think "good choice" while another is horrified because they think their own horse was sooo much better! (And obviously, you always do get people who just can't handle losing!
