Description

We are looking for a long term loan home for our Zorse. He is currently the ONLY zorse in the UK, this is a once in a life time opportunity.
He is 4 years old, a gelding, his mother is an american Grey Arab and his father is a grants Zebra. He was imported from the USA in 2011 and we have only had him here a couple of months.
He is broken to ride, and is stunning to look at. He gets on well with other large ponies and horse, but does not like smaller animals (mini shetlands, small donkeys, sheep).
He needs a very experienced home, he would suit television work, display work or would be an amazing attraction for a business.
Zorses have 3 times the strength of a normal horse. His senses are much more acute than that of a horse, and his handling techniques are very different.
Please no time wasters, we will only consider the very best of homes. A home check will be carried out. Terms to be discussed depending on what you want him for.
We are only looking for a loan home as he needs more time spent with him and would benfit from being a working animal.
Please note, we are a UK Charity and this will not be a free loan. There will be a weekly / monthly fee for loaning this animal. Although this is negotiable depending on what you can offer him. He is one of a kind, literally the ONLY Zorse in the UK. You will also need full insurance.

What a deal!
Pay us £500 a month and bring on our youngster we don't have a use for....
Oh & no mention of the DWA license needed.

Just who in the UK is going to have experience of this hybrid or pay more than it would cost to import one over the course of a year?
I take it this private advertiser is the usual exotic equines place?
 
am i reading it right that they want £500 a month for you to take the crossbreed away and do something useful with it while they sit back and do nothing:eek: awesome i'm sure the dragons den would be impressed:rolleyes:
 
You could do Native pony classes on him - Native of Africa if anyone asked! I've always thought it would be great fun to have a zebra to ride!
 
I suppose for £500 a month it would be cheaper to get a grey and get stripes tattoo'd on.

This is my lad embarrassed at how I treat him :p

as per the dailymail article which says the don't necessarily agree with the hybrids but they needed a new home/rescuing .. who imported them in the first place?
 
Surely that's more of a lease than a loan? Do you need a licence for a zebra cross:confused: There was a racehorse trainer who broke a zebra to ride and hacked it to the pub, apparently!
 
I know of hybrid vigour but 3x the strength of a normal horse??? Zebras as work animals were no good due to their lack of strength/stamina.

About 18 years ago there was an advert in Horse and Hound for a Zeedonk that had been bred in this country. A retired judge bought him and had him gelded and taught to drive. I remember them attending a driving parade that I took my turnout to.

Apparently as it had a domesticated mother, in this case a donkey, no licence was required to keep it.

"The following is a list of animals for which, when kept privately, a
licence is required under the Act.

Family Equidae: Asses, horses and zebras.
All species except Equus asinus and Equus
caballus.

The donkey and domestic horse are
excepted."
then further down the tables-
"Any hybrid of a kind of animal specified
(other than by way of exception) in the
foregoing provisions of this column where at
Any mammalian hybrids with at least one
parent of a specified kind, and any animal of
which at least one parent is such a hybrid. "

So Zebra crosses do need a DWA licence.
The terms of any such licence depend on the issuing council and may be similar to requirements for keeping a stallion up to full zoo type enclosures.
 
That donkey rescue is not too far from me. They are always appearing in the local paper with heart rending appeals for money for their animals, including buying some in from abroad (Romania I think). They were also appealing for a farm to buy cheap or rent because they were losing their grazing, not sure if that was resolved.
I think some of the larger charities are slightly concerned about them.
