Hi :) I was just wondering if there's anyone here who has any experience of Zylkene? I've been thinking about trying it for my collie boy. He has a lot of fear and 'Oh My God how do I cope with this????' issues, and gets himself quite stressed sometimes. He's MUCH better than he was when I first took him on and on a day to day basis he is very manageable, he runs and plays off lead every day, we have several dogs we walk with regularly and there are now quite a few people who he LOVES seeing and having snuggles with. In the next few months our living arrangements are going to change when I graduate from uni and although I will center the whole thing around keeping him calm and stress-free I was wondering if this might be worth trying. Thanks for any advice :)

I tried it with lily who gets over excited at shows and tends to build up with gas. Thb it did not help her. The thing that has worked is an anxiety wrap, similar to a thunder shirt but so much cheaper. Check out tellington touch in how to fit a wrap

Worth noting that as a rule, border collies as a breed are not really designed or bred to cope with pressure or stress so while there are some things you can do, drugs you can administer, for some dogs it is just a case of managing it/helping the dog through as best you can.

I have heard - and several friends use it at shows (both themselves and for the dog) Bach's flower remedies can help with stress issues...

I use it for my springer who is blind and it just takes the edge off him, takes a while to work so bear with it but in my opinion it does work. It's a natural product so there is no harm in giving it a go. Hope it works out for your Collie!

its worth a try but it did nothing for my extremely stressy BC. Im now trying Skullcap & Valerian which a few collie people have had success with that I know.

I posted this on a similar thread back in September:

I am currently giving my 1 year old dog a 225mg Zylkene capsule daily in his breakfast.
He is a busy dog, never settled, constantly pacing, using my furniture like some kind of assault course unless I was watching him like a hawk, he knows what the boundaries are and he likes to push them (usually while looking at me over his shoulder).
Within about 4 or 5 days of starting the Zylkene I could see a real difference, he now settles, for the first few days we sat staring at him in disbelief! He lays by our feet while we sit on the sofa, he concentrates better at training sessions, he interacts more calmly with our other dog too.
We are nearing the end of a 100 capsule box and I'll definitely be buying a new box.
It could of course be a complete coincidence, maybe he just decided to grow up that week!

I weaned Gadget off the Zylkene eventually and he is now the same as he was on the capsules. I do think that it somehow helped him through his thuggish yob stage. He is a collie.

Thanks guys, I've been emailing a vet from the company but wanted to try and get an unbiased opinion too! Believe me, we manage him on a daily basis, I've never used any products like this before - he's come a million miles from when I got him but he hates it when we move so want to do whatever I can to make it easier on him :) Fingers crossed for some positive results!

We've used it on our lurcher for the last few years on the build up to 5th nov and it really takes the edge off, she's usually the stressy run and hide type.
