Hi

Can anyone out there help me I am new to this forum and my answer could be somewhere but anyway here's my problem I have a Irish sports horse who gets extremely wound up with things it's fear rather than naughtiness I have tried a calmer but not sure if I believe they work as horses can not digest magnesium I wonder how they work, anyway I spoke to my vet and he suggested zylkene as this is used for only horses with anxiety/fear. I was wondering if anyone uses it and does it really work also do u use it as a on going thing or just when needed it is quite expensive so I don't want to try it till I have heard things about it. TIA

Never heard of it but looking at the ingredient list suggests similar to science supplements prokalm, or equine america.

Its seems to be readily available from the web so I guess no harm in trying, especially if the vet has suggested it, albeit for the placebo effect to get to the bottom of the horses behaviour (which will be for a reason).

I have used it on a very long term box resting competition horse. It is based on nursing mares milk and claims to give the same calming effects.

It smelt strongly of slightly gone off milk and my horse turned his nose up at it. I persevered and did around a month on it but I did not find it of any benefit.

The one that worked for me was Vetplus Calmex. I don't know if it is purchasable or vet only supplied.

My vet was very hands on with the husbandry of my horse and we were very pleased with the Calmex.

It's trial and error with calmers, as it depends whether it's a deficiency (and if so which one) which is causing the 'high alert' behaviour... can get expensive!

I know three people who've used zylkene and all have had really good results with it after trying various others first, but they've all been using it for specific things like shows or training. For longer term calmness a friend uses Day, Son and Hewitt's Relaxin on a box rested stallion with success.
