I haven't used it for travelling but have used it in the past couple of weeks for bringing a horse back into work who was on box rest for about 7 months. My horse is normally quite calm but after 7 long months, he was understandably getting fed up. When he was coming back into work he was getting a bit stressed and uptight and I wasn't looking forward to sitting on him again. I initially gave him two sachets a day for ten days (he's 16.3hh WB) then cut it down to one sachet per day. I would say it definitely took the edge off him and calmed him without making him dopey or sleepy. He has travelled while on it with no problems and I'm intending to use it when travelling my two horses to Northern Ireland on the boat in a couple of weeks time. Hope this helps
I'll be interested to watch this. I went to a presentation on it, and its not been scientifically tested on horses, only on humans and rats *I think.* I'm a bit dubious about its claims, and specifically about its claims to have no known side effects even for long term use... well of course it wouldn't, they haven't tested it properly on horses!
The evidence is simply that a few owners have observed calmer behaviour in their horse.
Not used it for travelling but I have a 2yo TB x who had never been in a stable but needed box rest during the ice and snow for an abscess. He was chilled out on it and not stressed at all. I also tried it for a farrier visit when he was in a "fiesty phase" and he definitely was chilled out for that too.
I used it for about 2 weeks of box rest then stopped once he was used to being in.
I have some in the first aid kit now in case of him needing rest again. It kicks in about 24 hours after administration and you need to give 48 hours prior to the "event" or procedure.
Just a word of warning though, someone on here (I cannot remember who) had a horse that went bonkers on it - so maybe try it at home first?
I have used it the last 2 times I have taken my horse to a competition. He was usually stressy, excitable and tense. I have given him one sachet the night before and two on the morning of the comp. I have found him to be more relaxed and able to concentrate on me rather than being spooky and excitable. I cannot say for definite that its the Zylkene but I would say on the occsions that I have given it to him his behaviour has been more relaxed.
