Most stupid thing you've called the vet for?

My vet has now done *two* lameness exams including x-rays on a sound horse. In my defence, the first time, he'd gone hopping lame after XC but in the time between calling the vet on the Monday and taking him to the clinic on the Weds, he was sound. He then got to repeat the experience including...

Suspected uveitis with ongoing issues and growing vet bill.

My old boy (now 29) has had blocked tear duct issues that present as similar to uveitis on and off for the 17 years I've had him. Once the tear duct is cleared, he goes back to normal until the next bout (usually brought on by dust in the summer) so it could be due to the blocked tear duct.

    Helgstrand…

As someone reasonably local to the person in question, although I don't know all the ins and outs, I can say she has a poor reputation amongst local horse people and I've seen personally the care she has given some horses (poor foot care/paddock maintenance/overcrowding/hoarding).

    Helgstrand…

Just FYI, Becks Nairn has no formal training and is a bit notorious in the local area so I'd be hesitant to take her word as gospel. Her knowledge of biomechanics is pretty poor.

    Elbow Dysplasia

My childhood Lab had elbow dysplasia in both elbows, had surgery, and they eventually fused. Aside from the initial pre-surgery lameness, he never had an issue with them doing normal pet dog stuff including running 10k+ with my sister. He lived to just over 15 and will forever be the goodest of...

    Boggle- USA bound!

Yes it is! I actually threw out the rug he had worn during that period because the smell clung onto it. Poor Fred, the other horses wouldn't talk to him for a solid week because he smelled bad. If I remember correctly, it can cross the blood/brain barrier and carry other drugs with it and also...

    Boggle- USA bound!

I've been following your story a bit - one of my horses came in from the paddock very lame and quiet having looked like he'd had a run in with yhe temp fencing. The next day, I realised he wasn't just lame (both knees had blown up so he was also lame!), he was quite ataxic in behind. He had a...

Horse suddenly refusing bit - help!!

As a totally off the wall thing, my boy who is usually pretty reliable to bridle was suddenly a bit funny. I wrote it off as being dark/windy as he wasn't *that* bad but thought maybe dental or something. On the third day, he swung his head away from me, bumped it against the wall, and burst the...

    Bathing a chicken

I'd definitely trim the feathers back to make it easier. It doesnt need to be back to the skin but just a bit of detailing. I had a rescue shaver (who'd been dumped in a local park missing most of her back feathers) who suffered a bit and trimming the feathers back a bit was the thing that...

    Bathing a chicken

I've always used dishwashing liquid or horse shampoo on my chooks (I rehab birds for a chicken rescue) - why does she have a mucky bum? The usual cause of poo, outside diet, is intestinal worms so I'd definitely worm her. I'd also check for lice egg cases (big grey chunks attached to feathers)...

Laser treatment- is it very successful

My old boy did a hind tendon when he was 20-ish and recovered sound. He's now 28 and hasn't had a recurrence, as sound as a 28 year old with hock arthritis can be. I just did small paddock rest until he was sound/leg was firm and hard then turned him out for about 6 months. He did come back to...

    Side-effects of frequent IV sedation

Not entirely what you asked but one of my TBs, who is a stroppy colty type to handle, seems to believe that all IV jabs are sedatives and falls asleep as soon as you put the needle in even if it's antibiotics or IV fluids. Takes him about 5 mins to realise and go back to twatting around.

Bitting up + Martingale for runaway pony

I've got a spicy little powerhouse of an OTTB and she hacks and jumps in a Waterford. A gag or a Pelham were too much, snaffle was too little. Both of us are happy with the Waterford.

    Musing over my horse

I felt enormous relief when I retired an OTTB of mine - inconsistent behaviour and quite frankly a shit work ethic. I had no inclination to do major diagnostics as he was quite happy/sound in the paddock and I had the space to retire him. I then promptly picked up another OTTB who hadn't been...
