‘Rising 5’ - what does this mean?

Most horses are classed as a year older on 1st Jan. Even if their actual birthday is in June. As its late in the year, rising 5 is correct as the horse will 'turn 5' next month. Competitions also use this structure so for instance if your horse turns 4 in June, you could not enter a youngstock...

    Older Towing Cars <10k. Q5?

I bought a volvo xc90 for £3800 earlier this year. It is getting on for 20 years old, but only had 80k miles and I absolutely love it. Tow limit is 2250kg though so may not be enough depending on your trailer. Suits me as mine are all under 13.2h.

    HOYS2025

Sadly very few bargains to be had. Shopping is great if you like Holland Cooper, Fairfax & favour and riding leggings! I personally prefer rummaging in the saddlery shops. There seemed to be a couple more of those this year and fewer eyebrows, gin or boot cleaning stands.

What bit for in hand showing

A magic bit, has nice neat rings. There is also a diddy pony bit company that does different types of snaffle.

    Show entry system

Both my nearest big multi day county shows use showing scene for all sections of their shows, including other livestock, horticulture etc.

    Horse shivering

The majority of vets recommend that horses are removed from sycamore pasture after 6 hours. I believe some research has gone into this, suggesting horses with access to grazing longer than this are more likely to suffer from sycamore poisoning. Like other posters my porky overweight natives...

    Fly rug chest expander

I use a normal turnout one on a fly rug. Haven't personally had any issues with her getting hot underneath it, even in that heatwave last week as it only covers a small section of her chest. However she does have a lot of shade, so I am not sure how it'd be in a paddock in full sun.

    Stopping pony pads slipping

I use a acavallo gel pad with a string girth on my round natives with a pony pad. Not sure if you can buy them in Shetland size though. It's not perfect but has helped a lot with slipping.

    Showing First time inhand showing

You don't need to stand square like you would in a dressage test. For in hand you need the back legs slightly apart and the front legs either together or slightly apart, so the judge can see all the legs at the same time. A great reply above about the steps of an in hand class. However when you...

Best feed for mixing supplements for a native pony

Speedibeet for my natives, with a small handful of Fibre Lite for the fussy one who won't eat speedibeet on its own. The Speedibeet lasts ages which is great!

    ‘This Equestrian Life’ podcast

I enjoy it, and TalkHorse. My favourite one is Shut up and Ride which is a lot more light hearted and funny.

    Sycamore saplings

I saw my pony eat a seedling while on lush grass, he just gobbled it straight up so I've been very proactive with seedlings since. I usually have them starting to come through in their hundreds from mid Feb, but this year I've found one! If only every year was like this.

    New to showing- In-hand

He is lovely. Section Bs are generally shown in leather rather than white halters, so a filly slip would be ideal. He will need to be bitted when he's a 2yo unless he is gelded before then. You will need a tweed jacket, shirt, tie, plain trousers and comfortable shoes/boots you can run in...

    Beautify by Neighked Horse

Sorry I don't remember exactly, but I bought three different human hair oils, one was Argan oil, from a health food shop and mixed them together with water for tails and hot clothing. Use them on my own hair too. Always patch test first though!

    Query: Bit for showing

They struggle sadly, but entries are so low across the board. Even in the m&m classes now.
