How long did it take you to get used to your horse?

It took me about 6 or 7 months to 'click' with my girl. She was originally supposed to be a mother/daughter share and was really my daughters choice rather than mine. However she was a lot greener than we'd been led to believe and thinking she was too much for her my daughter seemed to distance...

Effects of a Change of Yard

When I first bought my mare I began to think I'd been 'done', She climbed over the stable door regularly despite the advert saying she 'would live in or out'. She was stressy to ride and eventually bolted with me. I moved her to a different area where she could live out with a companion -...

    Falling off!

I only had 1 fall off the riding school ponies and horses I rode as a child and when I came back to riding as an adult. I didn't get a horse of my own till I had turned 40. I think I had 3 or 4 falls off my first one - a TB gelding. When looking for my 2nd horse I came close to getting a loan...

    Doctors vs vets

I can TOTALLY Sympathise Frankiecob. I thought I'd had a bad experience - but yours makes mine look positively fantastic. I came off my horse 4 weeks ago today. I was hacking alone when it happened but was found by another rider from the livery who luckily came along behind me. I'm almost sure I...

    Coping without our beloved horses!!

I'm struggling with this at the moment. I came off my horse 4 weeks ago tomorrow. I spent 5 days in hospital and since I've been home - I've managed to get up the yard 4 or 5 times to see her. She is being well looked after but not being up there twice a day, every day is just horrible.

Reasons to use a Pelham and opinions please -

I ride my sec D mare in a snaffle in the school and a Pelham to hack out. She is the sort of horse that gets her confidence from her rider. I have confidence issues on occasions. Whether the Pelham gives me better brakes or not is open to question, but I definitely feel more confident when using...

Type and size of pony any help?

Another vote for a section D. I'm a similar height and weight to you and have a 14.1 section D mare who is my horse of a lifetime. Good luck.

When is everyone else chucking their horses out 24/7?

Mines been out all winter, she doesn't really 'do' stables - she has a scary tendency to climb over the door! Tonight is the first night she has been rug-less though.

Where you began riding? Me, Whiteleaf...

I was hoping someone would mention the riding school I started at in the early to mid 70's. I don't have a clue what it was called and the land where it stood is now a huge housing estate. It was in Ipswich, the Rushmere/kesgrave area and we used to ride over Rushmere Heath. I started off on a...

Am I saying the right thing

I would say that they are trying it on. It depends what was in the agreement but if it was a full loan then I would have thought that costs like that should have been borne by them. I used to have a companion pony on full loan and 'maintainence' things like jabs and wormers were down to me...

Going to try horses- advice needed!

Hello again! That was what we agreed, I think I paid something like a 10% deposit and the agreement was that if she failed the vetting or something was flagged up that would make her unsuitable for my needs - then I would get it back. Probably better to get that in writing to be sure though...
