well done, yards can be pretty funny places, i'm lucky horses are at home, but i have a friend who's just been through all sorts of hell like you, your not alone!

not eating anything in the day,will make your horses body think it's in for a hard time,ie going in to starvation mode, and then any food it does get,through grazing muzzle will store as reserves/ie fat!
horses are little and often feeders ie grazers so would probably benefit from small holed...
