    Horse neglect / forum software

Thank you, that works for the general index, which solves my problem. :-) Mysteriously though, my new posts to old threads still don't come up in "Active topics" which you'd think would default to sorting by most recent post... at least in my experience with forums...

    Blood-sucking insects attacking horses ears

Feeding garlic also makes horses less attractive to bloodsucking insects, and has other benefits as well, especially in horses fighting infection, convalescing etc. You can research this online. Some people feed whole cloves and some horses eat it like that. Most horses will eat garlic if you...

    Horse neglect / forum software

Hello to all who gave me their thoughts and comments on the "Horse neglect" topic. I have clarified a few things and would appreciate further ideas, but please reply in the original topic, which is now several pages back (page 9 or 10 in the index just now, further back soon). I don't...

    Horse neglect

Thanks for everyone's thoughts and comments. Some extra information: Re donating rugs: The horse does have a rug. He just often doesn't wear it when he needs it. The owners live 5 min down the road from him but for some mysterious reason don't seem to notice weather changes very much. They...

    The CHOP!! any advice?

Avoid infection: Keep the flies off it ... don't let any dirt get in the wound... (happens quite easily when horses start rolling again and choose a dusty patch - don't let him do that) ... I'm sure your vet will fill you in though! ...and I think most male domesticated horses end up living...

Just a couple of odd scabby areas on hind legs.

Could it be rain scald? That is apparently a dermatitis caused by actinomycete infection. I have a horse with that, it comes and goes, and the vet said to treat it with a special shampoo for it. I've tried that, seems to help a little after some months of treatment, but there must be better...

Rode my horse for the first time after breaking my back 3 yrs ago!!!

Well done, good luck and I hope you don't have any more serious accidents like that. My husband (non-horsey, although he likes very small ponies "because of their size") just said when I read this story out, "You see, that's why I don't get on horses and I don't know why you do it!" - but he's...

    Horse neglect

I'm looking for some advice on what to do in situations of horse neglect similar to the one described in this post. I've heard people say that while the RSPCA is generally good for small animal cases and they're happy getting cats out of trees etc, they really aren't that great with large...

Animal Neglect...RSPCA useless, so are HAPPA

Just a clarification, as there seem to be different body condition scoring systems in different places: I am using a system between 1 and 10 where 1 is so thin there is organ damage, and 10 is a blob. A riding horse in good condition would be between 5 and 6, a racehorse 4ish.

Animal Neglect...RSPCA useless, so are HAPPA

I've heard people say that while the RSPCA is generally good for small animal cases and they're happy getting cats out of trees etc, they really aren't that great with large animals, especially those related to food production. We've had two dealings with them and they have both been rather...
