When does grass start to grow?

If grass only stopped growing in August because of flowering, then that would imply that all grasses flower in August, which they don't. It takes an air temperature of around 13°c and a soil temp of around 9°c for most grasses to grow (some will grow at lower temps), the soil temp will take...

Why do people think no one can look after their horse like they

I agree with the question to some extent but how many stories are out there about horses being bought (saved, rescued) from not very nice owners. My worry is that my horse may well be sold to some nice, caring and wonderful person, but what happens if, when, the horse is sold on. My horse is...

    DIY livery possibilities

The other option is to rent the stables and land as a whole. That way one person is responsible for the management of the yard. It's easier to deal with one person than three. As to the amount that should be paid, that all depends on what other facilities are available e.g. electric, acreage...

When was the last time you were pleased you where wearing a hat?

Cantering through woods and bashed my head on a low branch (well more of a big twig). It made a good clonk, so I'm sure it would have hurt without a hat on, maybe even have made me fall off.

Grumble, moan, rant - sexist equine industry

Mens riding gear is out there, it just tends to be more expensive and reduced in choice. It must be said that the market is aimed more at female riders as there are more of them. If you are selling a lot of something it becomes cheaper than selling a small amout of something (that's just...

    Are horses too cheap

Surely horses are only worth what someone is willing to pay. A £50,000 valued race horse may only make £40,000 at a sale, does that make it a bargin or is it too cheap? We have 4 horses only one was over a £1,000 and one of those was a bogof. We do everything thing we can for those horses...

Do you always always wear a hat?

Why wouldn't you. No matter how good a rider or how good the horse is. It only takes a split second to fall off. No ones too good not to wear a riding hat. Those that give it the big I AM, look at me, are just asking for brain damage. You'd need to be extremely lucky never to fall off a horse...

My first cob and he's Clydesdale too

This is my Clydesdale x, he's now about 12yrs old and managed to get to 16hh. [/IMG] In his summer coat and clean legs. It's the size of their feet that amaze me. Ever the hopeful that there's treats on offer.

    SHB new Hat ruling :(

As i'm sure everyone knows that it's law to have to wear a crash helmet to ride a motor bike or moped. A 50cc moped will only do about 30mph. A horse can do this speed and the rider is seated a lot higher up, so a fall has greater impact. Even if you are doing dressage, having a walk around the...

Are horses getting sharper or are riding standards dropping?

I think ppl have got the wrong horses. As in, they think they want a nice 4,5 or 6 year old ex racer or a 16-17hh hunter type, because they're real horses. When what they really need is a nice 14-15hh mature cob or cross breed.

How many of you can hear traffic noise where you live?

I live half a mile from any road. So hear very little road noise, i hear the whistling from the steam trains more often than the traffic.

    Why does everyone hate coloureds??

I read somewhere that the gypsies started breeding coloureds during the 1st world war because the army didn't want coloured horses.

    Why does everyone hate coloureds??

For those of you who say they don't see why you would want something that looks like a cow, There are many breeds of cow that are a solid colour. Some are grey (white), or brown, or black. That doesn't leave many colours for you to choose from for the colour of your horse. My horses look like...

Human cod liver oil capsules... for horses?

As far as i see it, horses aren't designed to eat fish or meat products. So i would stick to vegetable oils.
