    Blade wash alternatives?

Have to say I use surgical spirit to wash my blades and I'd never be without it now. Bonus is that it instantly cools hot blades too! so instead of getting one of those ice sprays I just whip the blades off, give them a quick swish about in surgical spirit, dry them, put them back on and re-oil...

    Gassy mare and seasons

Kinda similar but not season related. My mare had terrible bloating and gas that got worse over time. Vet immediately recommended codeine Phosphate as her horse had the same issue. Problem solved! It worked within about 2 days! She's on it long term now but very low dose. 1 tablet a day whereas...

    Unrealistic daily routine?

This thread often comes up on H&H. Seriously, who are you people??? :p 'I get up at 2am, walk the dog, muck out 6 horses, commute 3 hours, work a 10 hour shift, finish the horses, acknowledge my husband and then fall asleep at midnight'. No thank you!

    Why do people even bother?!

Well I'm hoping they are getting out of their stables when I'm not there but unfortunately I don't think that's the case. However I think DrZoidberg is right, I don't know enough and I will have to find out more before getting involved.

    Why do people even bother?!

I think you're correct in saying they naively think this is ok. They've seemingly had horses for years but have probably always kept them like this. Two of the four aren't broken but are in their early teens! I know the lack of turnout is horrifying some people but it's really standard round...

    Why do people even bother?!

Yeah it does bother me that the YO has apparently ignored it. Don't really get that, as other than thT it's seems so far to be a nicely run yard, though the owner isn't involved in a hands on way and she has girls that do the liveries.

    Why do people even bother?!

Sorry I realise there's currently a few threads about less than stellar owners on here but there's a situation at my yard that I just don't get. There's a family (older couple, grown up daughter) who have 4 horses that virtually never leave their stables. I moved to this yard a few months back...

    Rug storage recommendations please!

Thanks for the replies guys. Just shows how different everyone is and how ingenious horsey people are!

    Rug storage recommendations please!

So a change in yards means I'm in need of a big trunk/storage box thing for rugs, and general assorted pony stuff. Wondered if anyone had suggestions? I've found something on the B&Q website which is for storing garden soft furnishings and wonders if that'd work. It doesn't necessarily have to...

    Duvet days

Yes and not only do I work full time but I'm all over the country. Most weeks I don't get to the yard for 3 or 4 days out of 7. The honest truth is I don't ride enough but I make sure that when the fields are shut that she either goes out in a turn out pen, gets lunged or when I'm there is...

    Duvet days

Well I can only say you're all very lucky. There's barely a yard round here that offers winter turnout. Mine will leave her stable every day but that doesn't necessarily mean to go in a field.,

To shoe, or not to shoe, that is the question.

To shoe, or not to shoe, that is the question.

Thanks and yes I did. Tried Brewers yeast, as well as a whole host of well known products including Protexin. Unfortunately they just weren't strong enough to do the trick in this case. The Codeine however worked within a day!

To shoe, or not to shoe, that is the question.

Thanks for all replies. YCBM, she is on Codeine Phosphate to stop her scouring and being bloated. Has worked a treat. Vet thinks her gut is irritated by the length of fibre she's consuming. Her feet seem pretty good other than a bit of thrush in back feet when she was really scouring. Do you...

To shoe, or not to shoe, that is the question.

I'm sure this has been done to death but need some advice. Farrier is due later this week. My mare has had a full set of shoes for at least 14 years. She is currently in very light work, in a school only as we have no hacking as straight onto the main road. Recently my costs have gone up as...
