I've gone from 1 to 2, to 3, to 4! As others have said its the riding which is an issue. Above 2 the extra time poo picking/mucking out takes its toll. My goal is to have 2, one to compete, the other to tick along and do bits and bobs with. One came in lame the other day and I was so relived...
My horse had a hock clipped for steroid injections, vet came back 2 weeks later to do the other one and you could barely tell 1st hock had been clipped it had grown back so much. However 2nd hock has not grown back at all (clipped mid December). I think his coat must still have been growing...
I would go for top configuration, so you could make wash bay into additional storage if needed. Where will you hang wet/dirty rugs, somewhere to sling them that isn't in your tack room makes life a lot easier. Could you have a smaller well organised tack room, then space for drying rugs...
Yes I have! Hairy horse came in from field plastered in wed mud, vet coming shortly for steroid injections. Cue hairdryer on washed hocks so they would be dry and clipable in preparation for injections! Horse loved it, luckily no one else on the yard to confirm their suspicions that I'm...
Look up the tithe map for your parish, that's how we found out our field name :)
Its interesting to see where names have evolved from and which ones are still in use. I don't know whether they are 'official' names though, presumably you could name your field as you like? I like Breedy Butts...
Wish I had seen this thread sooner. Just moved over to wood pellets too, using them on top of mats. Have one pony who is very clean and can semi deep litter, get away with adding one bag every 10 days. My others are very messy and I don’t think I make much of a cost saving (one is a box...
Had new stables put up last year, lots of stuff I like but lots more stuff I wish had been done differently. Ours is an agricultural barn with internal stables in a 'lean-to' on the side. Its a steel framed building, the company who put up the building also made my internal stable partitions...
I have an arrangement like this with a friend (providing you mean the livery could stay year round and not just when you are away). My livery pays a reduced rate and helps with turning out/bringing in, farrier etc. while i'm at work, she will also do all mine if I have to go away for a few days...
I have a dunker, weirdly he has only started doing it this year. He's slightly overdue for the dentist now, so I'm hoping he might improve a bit once he's had his check-up. His tummy has always been good, but not a happy bunny at the moment so considering scoping for ulcers anyway. I give mine...
I stumbled across a Boots Gift card given to me as Christmas present by my mother in law last year yesterday, with strict instructions at the time to spend it on something nice for myself (I assumed some expensive exfoliator/moisuriser or perfume so I don't look and smell like a weathered swamp...
Ive not had any problems with large water buckets damaging EVA mats. I have automatic drinkers in most of my stables now, but have had to resort back to buckets with one who plays with the drinker and floods his stable. I did find the mats slippery to walk on when very wet (he manages to to...
If he is happy in his own paddock, can see other horserses and there is nothing else at the yard that is bothering you then I would stay. Livery yards that I have been on have always had individual turnout and its never been a problem, in fact it was a lot easier and safer. I have my own field...
I am about to switch to wood pellets so this thread is really helpful, I've been getting confused about the different white horse options. For people in the know is there a massive difference in quality between brands? Sorbeo seem to work out the cheapest for me factoring in delivery etc
