Gelding looks pregnant and not losing weight?

Because if I ride him any longer than 30 minutes he starts to get bored/fidgety, plus it’s all I have time for in the evenings after work. My instructor has always said you’re better having 20 minutes of good work rather than an hour of arguing.

Gelding looks pregnant and not losing weight?

I bought my little 15.3hh, 7yo gelding 3 months ago and when I got him he was so unfit, he looked like he was heavily in foal. Over the past 3 months I’ve built him up to now working 4 days a week for 20-30 minutes. I’ve taken a picture of his belly every month to see any progress, and it...

Horse ok to be stabled alone?

I currently own a 15.3hh, 7yo, skewbald gelding. He is my pride and joy, he’s such a wee character. I’ve kept him on DIY at a quiet little livery yard that you would barely know is there. There’s only 3 liveries and only 2 of us ride. Because of different work schedules, etc, we never ride...

How to teach a horse to hack alone?

Hi Guys, just a little update. We tried the foot soldier and he did the exact same thing, spun down and dragged me home then started to hop when I asked him to stand still. The foot soldier couldn’t even get a hold of him to lead him forward. Someone at the yard has offered to try and get him...

How to teach a horse to hack alone?

Thanks everyone for all the advice! The only thing about the foot soldier is I’d be worried he would get used to having someone beside him and therefore not want to go out without them. Am I just being paranoid? I used to have a horse that reared vertical when I took her out on her own so I...

How to teach a horse to hack alone?

I bought a 7 year old gelding 3 weeks ago and he has done absolutely nothing so I’m starting him from scratch. He had never been for a hack in his life so I started off leading him down the road, then driving him, and he was absolutely brilliant, especially for being on his own. I then decided...

    Horse refuses to hack alone?

I got her from one of the Traynor brothers based here in Ireland, she was fresh off the track when I bought her. Long reining doesn’t work either, she does the same thing.

    Horse refuses to hack alone?

It doesn’t seem to make a difference, she still spins.

    Horse refuses to hack alone?

I have had my 6 year old ex racehorse for 6 months and she refuses to hack out alone. As a result, we used to hack out with a friend at the yard and even then she would plant the hooves and spin round. Our first outing together was a forest trek with said friend. There was loads of other people...

    Alternatives to chaff?

My thoroughbred mare is on Blue Grass Cool and Condition Cubes and chaff but she doesn’t like the chaff. She loves the cubes, but will eat round the chaff, and when I go up in the evenings to muck her out, her breakfast chaff is still in her bucket and it’s such a waste. I only use chaff to...

Horse refuses to hack alone - help?

I’ve had my 5 year old chestnut mare for a month now. I like to have a weekly routine with her and Sundays are our hacking days. The first time I hacked her was with another horse and she sometimes spooked or spun round but when she saw the other horse walking forward she followed. I didn’t...

Where to find horses for sale in Northern Ireland?

I'm looking for a horse after a year out of it and there seems to be nothing in Northern Ireland! The time of year probably doesn't help but I would like a horse by the end of January, although you can't rush these things. I've looked on DoneDeal (where I happened to stumble upon my previous...

    Afford a horse on 15K a year?

I probably should have mentioned in my post that the livery at my old yard (and the one I would be going back to) is £25 a week including haylage. For the moment I'm looking for a job in just about anywhere to get the money up, just while I figure out what I want to do with my life, but I'll...

    Afford a horse on 15K a year?

Hello 😊 my name is Victoria, I'm 18, from Northern Ireland and I am looking to get a horse again after being out of it a year. Before giving it up, I had been riding since I was about 7 years old and it broke my heart to have to sell my amazing mare due to work commitments. I have since...
