That is a bizarre tragedy. I wish the horse might have been spared the gunshot, and studied to determine what 'snapped', so that perhaps it might be prevented in future. Problems of this nature can seldom be judged by autopsy alone.

To go for twelve hours during waking hours without food does seem to be excessive.

I am very sorry to hear of your injury, and hope that your hand heals quickly. I am sure she never would have done it if she knew the harm it would cause - they often don't know their own strength.

Certainly they are like family members. And if one has the means to support them, and they are not suffering a terminal illness or pain, then one has a duty to let them live out their natural lives among loved ones.
