14 stone gent .. What size horse?

my mare (in sigs) could quite happily carry 14stone when fit :)
she is however a little long in the back so i'd want her to be fit to carry the weight - saying that even when i am 10stone i still bring her into work long reining first to gain some strength accross her back before i expect her to take a rider - i think its only fair
she's a chunky ISH type

Can I just point out, that in the 2012 grand national, there were a few jockeys that weighed 14stone, but their body proportion of muscle to fat is a lot different than say myself, where I'm nowhere near as muscly as they are. Plus, they are riding very fine horses at fast speeds. This is because the horses are up to the job, with the appropriate muscle to carry these men, and the men are fit enough to hold themselves correctly and work in sync with the horse.

14 stone jockeys:eek: That really really surprises me, I thought that even jump jocks weighed in around 12 stone. Just purely out of interest what height and weight would be the horses that they were riding? LOL, as you say though their 14 stone would be a very very fit 14 stone, but the weight is still there.

Not read all the replies but there is a paradox which is that many weight carriers are short backed and can't take the length of saddle that larger riders need. A tall rider normally gets away with a more forward cut and longer flap, but even they may need a bigger seat, and certainly a rider with more generous erm lateral proportions will need a larger seat size. Many 15HH cobs can only take 16.5-17" saddles which are no good for most men.

I think you'll find that whoever told you that was lying!!
No horse in any race will ever carry that amount of weight!

OP, i think your friend needs a 16.1hh ardenne cross. Preferably bay roan, gelding. Called Fred.

Funnily enough i know of one just like that for sale,......

;)
:D

:cool::cool:

I've ridden 15hh cobs when I was 16 stone with no problems. I lost a bit of weight so now 14 stone and the smallest I've ridden is a 14.2 pony, but I do ride quite light in the saddle, and I'm 5 ft 4 with short legs so I'll never ride anything taller than 16hh

A Fell, Dales, Highland or cob should be well upto carrying that weight so thats your natives and cobs

Then I would say warmblood, cleaveland bay, Irish draft types also.

So lots of choice there for you.
