15.2hh too small??

I am 6' 1" and weight 12 1/2 stone. I ride a 14.2hh New Forest, and when I rode at a riding school (many years ago) I don't recall riding anything bigger that 15.2hh.

No, I wouldn't say 15.2hh is too small for someone 5' 8" tall.
 
Well it does depend on the build of the horse, to some extent but you should be fine on a 15.2hh. I used to have a WelshDxTB who was barely 15.2, I was slightly taller and 4lbs heavier than you, she carried me with no problem.
 
Depends on the breed I guess. My girls a 15.2hh TB, I'm 5'7 and weigh just over 9st. I would post a pic of me on her but don't know how to on my iPod so here's a link to a thread with pics :)

In the first lot of pics I look big on her but look better in the second lot as she had filled out and grown :) (was just under 15.1hh in the first lot)
 
Height after about 13hh means absolutely nothing!! You could have a 16hh delicate horse that isn't a weight carrier, but have a 13hh weight carrier with masses of bone that could carry just about anything!
 
I have long legs and just don't want to look to big in the ring! that's why i'm asking not that I think it wouldn't be able to carry me weight wise :-)

Phew. That's ok then! I thought you were going to be one of those skinny people that asks if they're too heavy. Sorry :o

I suppose in terms of your legs it depends on what type you go for. BH is just 15.3 if he stands on his tippy toes but looks huge as he is built like a tank (will find you a picture of a tall person on him in a second).

Here we go ( rider is probably 5'9'' I should say and as you can see is really rather leggy!) for reference I am 5'2'' and it's me jumping him in my siggy. I also reckon he's filled out from this picture so she'd probably look smaller on him now as well.

Depends on the build of the horse. A broad backed chunky type will take up your leg more than a narrow sort.

I'm 5' 4" and regularly rode a 14.2 tb/SecC cross and looked fine. As long as your legs aren't hanging below the belly I think 15.2 will be fine.
 
If you go to see them, get someone to video you on them, then you can decide for yourself.

Obviously weight wise you'd have no probs, but if you have long legs, unless its a wide horse you may look too tall..
 
I'm 5'9 (and a little bit:p) no idea what I am weight wise but my lad is 15hh on tip toes, though I am starting to feel rather big and leggy (sadly, I just don't seem to stop growing)

But it really depends on the built of the horse. Also, IMO, it depends on how you ride, if you're a quiet, elegant rider, you can sometimes get away with some extra length
 
I'm only 5ft4 and athletic build, but I do think I look out of place on anything under about 15.2/3. I ride long and just make things look small, build wise I don't look out of place on sort of 14hh med build types upwards, but I just seem to take up a lot of horse length wise? If that makes any sense at all!

I have taken to riding my jumping length with my 14.3hh fine build standiextb because I feel like I look a tool if I ride my normal length!

So I'm the other way round! I'd never buy anything under 16.1 for myself, as I just think I don't look right!
 
I weigh about 12.5 stone and I'm 5'9. I've just bought a sec D, on his passport he's 15hh, but I think he's actually 15.1/15.2 and he's fine for me. I also own a 14.3 arab x cob, and although I probably look a bit silly on her (I share her with my 10st 5'6 mum) she carries my weight fine. I do ride her with fairly short stirrups though so my feet don't dangle down too much!! :)
 
This is me on my New Forester. He is 13.2hh I'm 5ft 5in and at the time wt 10st plus saddle making 11st 11lbs (Fei wt)

We were on the second day of the 100 mile GHS and heading to a sliver (Just missing out on a Gold).

I also have a 14hh Arab mare that again has done the GHS and this year at the age of 21yrs old completed the 160k class.

the horse I was looking at is a Show riding hack type, I do ride rather long on my 15.1 Anglo and he doesn't look too small but marginal but then again he is always on tip toes and is a bit of a barrell
 
It's not your weight that is an issue it's more how you feel when your sat on him. You might feel a bit perched on top or your legs might be a bit long?

Go and have a look and see how you feel but i'm 6ft and my lad is 15.3hh but built like a barrel so takes my leg.

I know what you mean

I am only 5' 6'' and tried a 15.2h she was fairly slim and I looked too tall on her. Now I have a 16h (Just) WB who has a large girth and I look fine

Everyone had their own opinion on how they like to look on a horse sounds too me as though you would feel too tall on him and as you say its a LONG way
The other alternative to travelling is go to your local riding school see if they have something similar in build to try first (or a friend)?
 
The only reliable way to know is to get on and have someone take some pictures. It depends so much on the proportions of the horse and you.

My mare is 15.3hh and a riding horse type, I'm 5ft8" and look fine on her, even for the show ring. I ride long at the moment as our saddle is very straight cut (bought her from a showing family).

Sometimes having long legs makes you look better on a small horse as your body is shorter so you don't look top heavy. It is only a problem if you end up with dangly feet or sticky out knees.

For the perfect picture you want your feet to be slightly above the line of the horse's belly.
 
Its obviously useful to have people tell you their height and what they look okay on, but as said its also the width of the horse as to how much leg they will take up and more importantly the length of the leg! As an above poster has said shes 6ft and has a solid built 15.3hh and looks fine on him, but Im 6ft have a 16hh ISH with a decent amount of bone and pretty broad and yes she does look a little small for me as I have long legs (a 34" inside leg). So also take that into consideration :). Personally I couldnt care less as she easily carries my weight but I do look tall on her. I bought her as a project and shes turned out to be a cracker so shes stayed :) but I do look better on similar build 16.2hhs or 16.3hh/17hh TBs. I guess just look at pics of you on smaller/narrower horses (if you have any) and if you look just a little too big on them then this horse should be right? I dont know anything about showing but I'd want to be pretty certain horsey was going to be suitable size before travelling 300 miles :p :D.
