Hi all I'm in the process of buying my first horse after sharing for years (yipeee) and provided the vetting goes well I hope to be the owner of a medium weight 17 hh warmblood.

I'm looking into transport options and deffinately won't be able to afford a lorry but am dissapointed at the number of trailers that top out at 16.2, I know Ifor Williams has the HB511 which is suitable for bigger horses, can anyone reccomend any other types / makes and also any reputable dealer who may stock 2nd hand?

All help very very much appreciated!

I was in the same situation as you 6 months ago; although my boy is 17.3hh! I found the HB510 Ifor too small for Henry and I was really lucky to get a 13 year old Rice which is fibre glass (so not heavy like the old Rice's but still has a wooden floor which is the only downer) which is over 7ft tall. I searched FOR EVER for a tall trailer and it was frankly a nightmare but i was patient and now so pleased with my trailer.

So I would say your option are one of the new style Rice's like the Beaufort Sixty;or a Richardson Grande; see www.richardsontrailers.co.uk which has measurements on each style of Rice/Richardson box (you'll need over 7ft for a 17hh horse) and then go hunt for a second hand one and good luck as they are like hen's teeth!

My mare is 17.3 and we used to have a older Rice....now we have the IW510 which she fits in no problems but my friends 16.3 GelderlanderX struggles in it because he has a high head carriage

My 17.3hh travels in my Ifor 510 quite happily but I take the centre petition out so he has the whole trailer and he 's fine. I also put in the full width breast and breach bars.

My 17.1hh horse travels fine in my IW510 with the partition and his friend who is 16hh.
I know the Richardson Ultra will take large horses too - they don't seem to come up for sale very often though!

THANKS EVERYONE! vetting tomorrow.. dead excited really really hope this is my boy... and if so now know how to transport him!! THANKS A MILLION... and standbyfor many many more questions if he passes!
