So on back of my post bout vet bill im really thinking I need to update my first aid kit. Mines is pretty basic...vet wrap, purple spray, poultice, thermometer . Now ordered manuka honey. What's everyone's got ?
In addition to what you have I usually have (in no order!): Udder cream, Epsom salts, Soffban (or equivalent padding bandage), Duct tape, iodine spray, Terramycin spray, non adhesive dressings, knit firm (or equivalent), and cotton wool. There’s definitely more but brain has gone. Also a good pair of scissors is a must.
Oh and a couple of packets of polos. Good distraction for horse while someone’s doing emergency stuff, and useful to see if ‘not eating’ is an entire blanket thing or just applies to normal food.
I haven’t had that delight but I did have a mare decide she was going to eat nothing but carrots - even grass - while recovering from flu one Christmas. I was chasing around Christmas Eve morning buying carrots by the sackful, this was back when everything shut between Christmas and new year.Oh that so made me laugh - yes, yes and thrice yes!
I'd guess that you have also had an emergency dash to the village shop 2 minutes before closing time on New Years Eve for a tin of treacle to mix antibiotics in because some wretched pony has gone "Shan't" to every other delicacy
I have much of the above plus stethoscopes x 2 (1 in yard kit and same again in travel kit), v useful for passing on info to vet.
Syringes, tin of custard too.
Also records of resting heart rates, normal temperature etc.
If needing any powder (antibiotics etc) to be added to a picky eaters feed, then a few teaspoons of custard spooned into a syringe, powder added, stirred and then plunged into mouth like a wormer will do the job. Usually only ever needed when shops closed.....Please enlighten me as to the custard?
Those normal details are a great idea to save, I’ll get on that.
