So on back of my post bout vet bill im really thinking I need to update my first aid kit. Mines is pretty basic...vet wrap, purple spray, poultice, thermometer . Now ordered manuka honey. What's everyone's got ?

In addition to what you have I usually have (in no order!): Udder cream, Epsom salts, Soffban (or equivalent padding bandage), Duct tape, iodine spray, Terramycin spray, non adhesive dressings, knit firm (or equivalent), and cotton wool. There’s definitely more but brain has gone. Also a good pair of scissors is a must.

Tweezers. Couple of pairs of scissors- curved tip, big ones and tiny ones. Magnifying glass / sheet (don’t laugh, it’s useful for puncture wounds if you can’t juggle a phone with a zoomed in camera) Hoof boot for poultices. Bag of nappies for poultices. Electrolyte powders. A twitch and a blind fold in case of real disaster. Hard copy list of emergency phone numbers.

There’s probably a bunch of other stuff in there.

Gauze, little forceps (left over from packing hoof resection), vetwrap, cotton wool pads, salt, lintex, duct tape, thermometer, scissors, tweezers, hibiscrub, iodine, udder cream, filtabac, sudocreme, jars of baby food, syringes, bute, vaseline, nappies

Most of the above!
Also keep supplies well topped up - horses have a great knack of doing stuff just before a long bank holiday weekend!
Also access to a kitchen/kettle is invaluable to make up saline solution and sugardine. I keep a written note on the recipes for these in the first aid box too.

Oh and a couple of packets of polos. Good distraction for horse while someone’s doing emergency stuff, and useful to see if ‘not eating’ is an entire blanket thing or just applies to normal food.

Oh that so made me laugh - yes, yes and thrice yes!

I'd guess that you have also had an emergency dash to the village shop 2 minutes before closing time on New Years Eve for a tin of treacle to mix antibiotics in because some wretched pony has gone "Shan't" to every other delicacy

I haven’t had that delight but I did have a mare decide she was going to eat nothing but carrots - even grass - while recovering from flu one Christmas. I was chasing around Christmas Eve morning buying carrots by the sackful, this was back when everything shut between Christmas and new year.

She didn’t die but I did consider murder a few times that morning.

I have much of the above plus stethoscopes x 2 (1 in yard kit and same again in travel kit), v useful for passing on info to vet.
Syringes, tin of custard too.
Also records of resting heart rates, normal temperature etc.

Please enlighten me as to the custard?

Those normal details are a great idea to save, I’ll get on that.

If needing any powder (antibiotics etc) to be added to a picky eaters feed, then a few teaspoons of custard spooned into a syringe, powder added, stirred and then plunged into mouth like a wormer will do the job. Usually only ever needed when shops closed.....

I have all of the above but I must say make sure to have different dressing sizes on hand and another good tip from someone in here is having a notepad and pen to record vitals. God forbid it ever has to be used!

I also throw in sudacrem plus human plasters just in case!
A plastic bag for gathering bits
Rolls and rolls of duct tape
Wire cutters
Spare headcollar and lead rope as you can never find when need
Clean lidded Container for washing wounds
Clean bucket for soaking hoof
Hoof pick with brush attachment
Salt
Contact lens cleaner can be squirted at most bits
Handheld battery clippers for clearing away a cut

I had to make up an emergency first aid kit as my brother coopted the horse shed for his stuff when he moved in and we didn't know where he'd put our things. We have very uneventful ponies and I can't think when we last needed to open the box except to get the passports out but you know you'll need it as soon as you can't easily get to it. I prioritised things to help control bleeding - so saline in a spray can, dressings, soffban and vetrap. Other than that, I have a hoof care bucket with various gungy unguents. Also thermometer, scissors (several pairs), a knife, a tail bandage, vaseline, sudocreme, purple spray, fly cream, wound cream and aloe gel. I can guarantee several of these will never be opened. Things like duct tape I keep around for various jobs so I'd have them if needed but I haven't had to deal with an abscess for over a decade :o Very out of practice there!
