1ST Foal of 2014! Introducing Madams little colt :)

Congratulations OP!!

He could have held off a day though! All the best folk have birthdays on the 6th of January ;)

What a beauty.

I also have no problem with breeding if the foal is from good quality parents, and born into a knowledgable, loving environment.

I'm sorry. I won't comment again - I just feel that breeding in the UK is out of control, and that there are far too many horses needing homes.

errr....and you think berating every foal that is born will help? or that prohibiting the breeding of horses will help? there are people who breed irresponsibly but that does not mean that breeding in the Uk is out of control or that every single person who breeds is irresponsible....looks like this little one has been planned and everything well prepared for, so whats the problem?

OP lovely little'un and the best of luck for the future with that pair

Your inbox is full so I'll hijack the thread instead...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Going back a page now to look at babies family in the links :)

Congratulations OP! I used to work at a TB stud and really miss seeing new foals and watching them develop! Lucky you!
Shysmum, many of the over-bred, unwanted foals are piebalds. I have one and think you do too. Have we contributed to that over-breeding by buying piebalds? Just a thought...

He's a cracker OP, and a nice early foal for if you're showing or doing age classes. Always a risk if he'd dropped last week  !

. Where will the next generation of competition animals come from if none are bred?

Whilst I understand your sentiment Shysmum, it's not really valid here. As Millymincepie said, where would the quality horses come from if they're not bred? There are thousands and thousands of badly bred, poorly conformed coloured cobs and trotters out there but I can't really see them at the Olympics in 8yrs time, can you? I, like many others, don't want a hairy, badly put together tinker cob (I'd take a good quality one though) and wouldn't be willing to swap my specifically-bred quality horse for one. So were would I get him if not from someone like the OP?

Beautiful foal! OP what are your plans for him?

Shame some posters have to put a downer on the thread..

He's going to win the reining world championship at least 5 times and be a number 1 stallion!!! :D Joking aside, I'll let him grow up a bit then decide if I keep him or sell him on.

There is always someone ready to put a downer on threads and the sad thing is, they don't have the courage to apologise :( I'm sure Shysmum will read this and Im sure she wont apologise for lumping me in with the back yard breeders :/

He is smashing :) Many congrats OP!

Are Quarters bred early like TB's or is it just that you are oversea's and the breeding season is earlier where you are?

My boss has a Welsh Cob stud and has said that she quite likes having earlier foals (although not quite this early) as it means they are more mature and ready for their 1st winter, and also for the foal shows!

I love the bloodlines of your boy, I hope you have a wonderful future together! x

Shysmum. I bred him because there is a market forhim (if I choose to sell!) His dam is a very well bred, fully registered Quarter Horse This is her dams sire.......

Before you judge you need to know what and who you are judging.
An apology wouldn't be amiss :)

This made me smile - quite right too!! He is very well bred: quality dam, top quality sire, and not even in the UK so what does it matter about the UK breeding situation? LOL! I hope this little chap has loads of talent for you to enjoy, Fairynuff, well done Madam x

She probably won't, some people are just so narrow minded about breeding they just can't help but spread spiteful comments where they aren't needed. I really hope you keep posting updates - I love to see how people have got on with their babies. :)

You could just as easily say that about the human population in the UK but I assume you have plans for children, if you haven't got any already?

I wanted an early foal so that he will be a few months ahead of most of the 2014 crop. Like TBs a couple of months can mean a lot when they are started so young. Most Quarters are started at 18 to 24 months as their competitive life begins at 3 years old. Madam, his dam, missed the train and would have had to compete against 5/6/7 year olds with masses of experience behind them. She has been rated as a '72 plus' by the european champion reining rider so I believe that she is qualified to be a good broodmare. Time will tell :)
