Bey the 2year old and Kay the 5 year old are turned out together in the bigger winter field.

while Pig, my 19year old, is in her own smaller paddock so i can ration her grass/hay intake due to her laminitis/weight and so she doesnt get pestered by B.

the 2 get on fine most of the time, although i think Bey does pester Kaya quite a lot and make her swap haynets in the field until she finds the one she likes best which winds K up lol

until someone comes down to bring them in.

then Kay pulls a face at or approaches the gate/ Bey, (who is now the rather bossy boss

)and Bey spins round threatening to kick Kay. she doesnt normally actually kick out though.

however Kay almost always bucks out as she slopes off.
there have been a few times when they have been bum to bum both threatening each other...

or one has been 'trapped' by the gate.

I am worried one could get a serious injury.....

they have been out together for a good 2 months so they are well used to each other and have plenty of hay/haylage over the daytime.

Kay has come in with a little cut on her thigh and bey has come in with a large swelling due to bruising on her back cannon from a kick over the last month.

SO would you -

leave them to it and hope they dont hurt each other

put Pig (Bs dam) back out with B in the big field and keep kaya on her own in the smaller paddock?and just ration Pigs hay even more over night

while they are in and put her muzzle on (which she hates) when the grass comes through?

or put Bey in the smaller paddock on her own and put the other 2 (both good doers) in together?

none wear shoes.

Pig is the definate boss over Kay and they never have a to-do as they both know where they stand.she is still far too tolerant of Bey though and will let her pester her...

argh!

Would the three of them be better off together - with the older horse acting as the disciplinarian? If not, then I'd have to split them up I'm afraid.

And as regards the hay - always have more piles of hay than horses - so two horses = at least 3 piles of hay, and so on. That in itself might sort the problem out as they're not competing in any way for feed, which will take the stress out of their living situation.

They would probably get on better together.
More of a heard.
It make make more structored hear group with Pig as leader.

My tb took about 2 years to settle in his position in our heard, he was always getting bite and kicks, from trying it on with the others!

sadly putting the 3 in together isnt an option as YO doesnt want too many horses per field whilst they are damaged from the winter...

i do think it would help balance things out as Pig is very much herd leader.

in the summer that will be ok once the grass is through/ground is dry, its just for now and next winter really.

they have 4 nets out between the 2 of them so no problem scrapping over food.
its only a problem at bringing in time.

i think i will just have to put either b or K on their own for now, rather than risk an injury.....

Why cant they just get along?!LOL

Silly YO - if the fields are buggered, they're buggered. They'll soon recover after they're moved off on to spring grazing.

could you put all 3 in together? My youngster is a field pest and can only go out with the big thoroughbred as he is big enough to handle storm jumping on him! When i put my old pony in with them (slightly smaller) the youngster wouldnt leave him alone for a few weeks but eventually the 2 older one put him in his place... after all he can only annoy one of them at a time!!!
