Normally a vet will castrate at about a year, however if the testicles are big enough they will do it b4 a year.
Tthe weight issue is more to do with change in metabolism due to reduction of released hormones, the dog does not get lazy, it just needs less food more exa-size.
I have 8 dogs and not one of them is over weight, even my greedy rotti is nice and slender, cos i reduce the food intake.
