When you said it was jumping I thought it would be over tiny little logs (which would be bad enough) but those jumps are a decent size

That is just wrong. There is enough information out there about bringing on horses and i bet most of them dont suggest xc training at 2

And it's a nice horse too :/
However, I didn't think that most competitions will allow you to jump a horse under 4yrs old? (well, all I've ever entered have usually stated so) Therefore I can't see them getting many people interested, as the horse, no matter how good it is, will have to be stuck in a field/stable or heaven forbid they might continue working it until it's old enough to compete....
It's a shame

Wrong wrong wrong. What on earth is the matter with people, thinking it's fine to start these babies so young? Are they influenced by the racing scenario where 2 yr olds are backed and raced at that age? Which in my opinion isn't right but hey ho, tradition etc...Or are they influenced by the traveller fraternity where they road race yearlings in carts? Wrong? it's criminal, but again, tradition, and what can you do?

I feel VERY strongly about this issue..can you tell? I would absolutely love for a law to be passed that no equine would be ridden or driven before the age of 4. With no exceptions, TB's included, but it would never work as the government make so much money from the betting industry. And then sadly you get these idiots as in this advert following suit as 'if it's alright for the the posh TB's it must be OK for other types of horse'. GRRRR!!!!!!!

It looks older than 2.5 to me, so am hoping it is a mistake in the advert.

They specify 2 1/2 years twice and state its currently 14.2hh to make 15.1hh, so unlikely to be a mistake. Shame as it looks a decent horse.

they do loose jump foals and youngstock abroad, mainly germany holland and belgium to see if they have scope! but i daresay it catches up re joints etc in later life! i think unnecessary to test anything before its 3 or 4. then still give time to mature and brain develop! irish often hunt 3 year olds!!!

absolutely disgusting, can't believe that anyone would think that that is right/ The other stupid thing is saying that it is a mothers dream!!

Would ILPH or Rspca not do anything about this sort of thing under the new animal health and welfare act/ I already know the answer to this i suppose, but they should step in with cases like this/

It doesn't look two but the ad does say about it making 15.2 so it must be a youngster?

I don't really like the idea of jumping before they are four so if it really is two that is absolutely disgusting

Tbh though ofcourseyou can - irish hunt their 3yos in the late autumn/winter of their 3yo year and we tend to breed our sport horses to be born in April/May/early June so they are 3 and a half usually if not more - plus many of those horses end up in the UK as sound hunters and eventers that are still going in their 20s. It hasnt been proven to cause them any problems.
It looks like a really nice cob - pity they have started him so early - as has been said, any buyer cant do any competing for at least a yr so not much point in purchasing it really i there.

I thought that too, but would they make the same typo more than once?

Unfortunately there is a 2yr old TB on our yard that has already been lunged, backed, broken and now being ridden out. Can't approach the owner at all and to be honest I would rather not be involved. The other liveries have all tried to speak to her but to no avail.
Really sad

that is terrible. The growth plates in the bones will be soft and open and easily damaged at that age leading to joint problems and OA much younger than usual. Not to mention the effect it will have on the horse mentally.

Its sickening.

There is a reason why horses are not backed until 3 at the earliest.

Personally, I would not back a horse until 3-3 1/2 and jump until 4 1/5 to five when the growth plates are starting to close up and harden.
