2023 Foals

My yearling is 18 months and the same size (14.1 and 14.3 behind). She string tests to 15hh. I think 14.1 at this age suggests a bit bigger than 15hh generally so you could be OK. The previous 2 of this mare's offspring made 15hh: one to a 16.2 stallion and one to a 14.2 stallion! This time round the stallion is 14.2 again. The mare is 15hh but has much bigger bloodlines behind her.
This is promising ☺️

Done to death, I know…but looking for a bit of reassurance (or otherwise…)

So the 15.2hh I “ordered” is 18m and 14.1hh - nearly 15hh at her butt…

Dam is 15.3hh WB, sire 16hh WB…

Mums first foal, Sires first foal to a mare less than 16hh so hard to judge from previous offspring…

Am I getting a 15.2/16hh? At 5”4” I really hope so ☺️

I ordered a 15.2hh from a 15.1 mare ( her sire 16.1), and a 16.2hh stallion. Was a first foal for the mare.

Got a 16.3hh 🤦‍♀️, and I'm 5'2".

Sorry

It might be worth looking back down the family tree. My 19month old is already around 15.2, even though his mum is 15.3 and his dad is 16h. I've since found out that his grandsires are 16.3 and 17hh. Luckily he's super quiet and polite so far. The rule is they grow 2 more hands from a year old and 1 more hand from a 2yr old (so hopefully yours will have 1.5hh left to grow). However that's just a guide and I know of several instances where it's not been accurate. I certainly hope it's not in my yearling's case! 🙈

Also maiden mare foals are known to be slightly smaller than the mare's subsequent foals.

Now 2 year old Ana... (Cormint (HOLST) X Zirocco blue (KWPN) about 16hh and starting to look like a horse (with a scruffy and very unloved mane!!)

First homebred was delivered safely in the early hours of Friday morning. A beautiful filly out of a lovely up and coming stallion here in Ireland with the mare out of T'is Voltaire and the sire with Comthago VDL and VDL Harley in the breeding.

Bella showed no sign of foaling at all Thursday evening when I did the last check before bed and then when my boyfriend was home from the pub at just after 12am there was a little foal lying in the field. Of course she birthed in the muckiest part of the field so took us quiet some time to get the foal up but once she was up we couldn't keep her still at all! Such a character already, she's everything I could've wish for and more!💓
2 years later, the extremely scruffy Callie is just the funniest horse to have on the yard. Such a lovely sweet mare and such a softy with my own baby. I'm quite proud of my first home bred and thankfully anyone who comes to do stuff with the horses are full of praise for her too! Need to get better pictures of her!

She’s looking fab !

Here’s Rocky , he looks more like a 4yo than 2. He behaves like it as well . Still the same lovely attitude.

@ihatework hows the lovely Coco doing? She was a striking foal.

@Asha, thank you for asking!
With my big rose tinted specs on I think she is super! Bold. Precocious. Growing lovely and evenly (unlike her mother). Inherited some fat genes from somewhere (also unlike her mother!).

Some good friends bought me a photo shoot and I love this one of us and think I’ll get it printed!

Wow, she really is stunning. What a fab photo of you both, definitely one for the wall. Very kind eye too.
Its funny you mention the fat gene, Rockys mum although a pure ID isnt your typical good doer, whereas Rocky .. well i think we can all see hes nicely covered.

2 years later and here's my Connemara x WB. Looking pretty grown up and now over 14.2. Hoping for 15 hh.

I took Rocky ( pure bred Irish draught ) to the futurity in the native class . He was super well behaved especially as it was his first show.
Lost a shed load of marks as he wouldn’t canter , as he was staring at himself in the mirrors , and the judges just didn’t give me enough time to get him moving . But they did really like him , with a 9 for confo and 8.5 for walk and 7.75 for trot . Super proud of him IMG_0078.jpegIMG_0075.jpegIMG_0076.jpeg
