2025 Eventing Euros - long list

For me, personally, I think eventing (and XC) should be a good test of endurance and I do find it interesting that continental riders (particularly Germans) seem to only run their horses on easy courses. I get why they do it, but I do find it interesting.
Interesting that they might think the cross country is challenging here isn’t it. Mark Phillips is supervising the course isn’t he as championship builders are in short supply. David Evans the current Blenheim course designer is assistant as he does not hold the championship qualification yet.
Also all on grass which many continental horses are not used to.

I actually think your question should be how is a horse thriving at the top level of the sport yet struggles to gallop 9 mins round undulating terrain. Says more about where the sport is now for champs. In the past that would be a 3* YR horse.

Christoph Wahler is entered for Burghley (as back up in case not selected for German team I guess?)

heard there was some behind the scenes drama about it but don't know what it was... very much looking forward to hopefully seeing Rosalent at Burghley instead if Oliver can now put in a late entry since the list is out... (and Harry showing everyone how it is done around the XC of course!)
Delighted for Caroline to get the nod, and for Piggy to have a championship horse in the making with Halo

Oh really disappointing for Harry, Gemma and Oli. Delighted for Caroline, Tom, Yas and Piggy.

I'm going to Blenheim for the duration so excited whoever is in the team.

Good to see so many women vs. the French all male team! Chauvins.

I always think it’s odd that European championships, worlds and Olympics are a level below top level of the sport. Is there any other sport where there is a level above Olympic level. I know why eventing is like this but am genuinely interested to know if there’s another sport where some competitors would prefer to win a Burghley equivalent than an Olympic medal.

I guess things like football, rugby, golf, tennis etc are similar

It's interesting isn't it as there are two parts to this - you have sports that have more popular things to win outside of the Olympics (tennis, golf, football), and then you have a sport that has its actual standard/test dropped to ensure the less experienced nations can compete on a level playing field.

For tennis, while the slams are the big wins, I don't think the standard/quality of the sport drops at all - there have been Olympic matches that would rival any Slam final (Murray - Del Potro in Rio for one!) albeit in three sets for the men, which is usual practice outside of the slams anyway. Rugby is slightly different as it's sevens at Olympic level, and you don't get many full team members selected. Whereas eventing does have a defined lower standard. I am now quite intrigued is there another Olympic sport that is formally reduced standard/level wise to ensure wider competition/safety. Golf potentially as no olympic course would rival an Open or Masters.

Isn't the reason why rugby, football and boxing are 'lower level' at the Olympics due to the rules around amateurs competing? The players of the sports above are paid to play and so can't compete at the Olympics?

Eventing seems to be the only one they have lowered to get more competitors, even dressage and SJ are the normal standard as outside of the Olympics.

That’s what it used to be, but there isn’t the amateur rule anymore (for over 30 years I think)
They didn’t lower the standard in eventing to get more competitors (in fact, the number included has fallen), they lowered it to enable a fair spread of competitors from enough different nations.

Salty already has his start number at Burghley. And Austin has 2 running so a Spare for Blenheim 😁 Would be amazing if he could do well at Burghley but Ros, Oli and a few others would be competitive.

The Irish have a solid list of team options

Bit bizarre that Ros is running at a huge 5* but cant do a lower level just a few days later.

Agree, Izilot could maybe have done Euros if she wanted LG to go to Burghley? Pleased we will get to see him there though.

I think it’s incredibly important to respect whatever decision Ros wants to make about whether she runs/ doesn’t run. It is a deeply personal choice and one that she might not even know until the Xc warm up. She probably doesn’t want to put the team in a difficult position if she were to decide not to run, but equally, if she wants to do Burghley then that’s totally up to her
