2026 Foals

Just goes to show , with foals you can’t take your eye off them for a minute .
Vet came yesterday evening to check his hernia as I was convinced it had gone . Hey presto it’s all gone . Just a small hole that will eventually heal over . His mum has been stitched up . So all good .
This morning he looked a little quieter . Still boingy , but not as much as usual . Mmm , perhaps mums coming into foal heat . So turned them out . I watched for a minute and saw dripping from underneath . Closer inspection showed he’s leaking urine from his umbillicus .
Took his temp . 39 . So he’s been dropped off at the vets .
He’s knocked the end of the umbillicus off before it’s dried through . Probably from all his shenanigans !
Just waiting for vets to scan the abdomen and get blood results back . He will be given antibiotics , and hopefully not need surgery 🤞🤞

Vets just called, bloods still ok. But thats expected as weve definitely caught it early. Markers could still rise. Liver was a bit raised ( a bit odd) and temp still 39. But the fact he took extra sedation to get on the floor to scan his abdomen and is still 'spicy' is a very good sign. No sign of pus in abdomen. Hes ripped the end of the umbillicus right off over night and done a cracking job by all accounts. As its wide open. So they will dipping the navel throughout the day and he will have intravenous antbiotics.
How on earth hes done that ive no idea . Perhaps he caught it getting up as it was quite large, no idea. Foals eh ? Suicidal little feckers.

Latest update. The amount of urine coming through the umbillicus has increased. So dipping it isnt working. They are trying to avoid surgery as hes still so well in himself . Temp is now normal. So they have now clamped it, its sore and swollen as you'd expect. Sounds like hes gong to be there until at least wednesday next week.

Has anyone any good news / cute foal photos to share? Rather than my doom and gloom.

After a few positive days it’s all gone down hill again .
He’s started dripping again , so he’s been referred to another hospital . Dropped him off tonight and they are trying cryotherapy for a few days . If that doesn’t work then he will have surgery .
So it’s just a horrible waiting game . He’s had the first session , and will have another in the morning . Just hope it works. The surgery isn’t without risks

So sorry to hear this - fingers crossed he improves quickly and doesn’t need the surgery🤞

Hoping for a quick resolution @Asha

Poor little chap! And poor you, with all the ferrying back and forth, the worry and the uncertainty. Hope you've got someone on hand with a large glass of wine.

Thank you and yes , my daughter and husband have both been amazing . Glass of wine has been poured for me .
My mare has been amazing too . She’s kept calm throughout this ordeal so far . Which is no doubt helping the little fella . Hasn’t lost his appetite .

Everything crossed for you and him 🤞

Had a lovely update from the hospital . They watched him all night . The dripping stopped last night plus he was getting perkier by the hour . This morning he’s feeling well enough to object to having his meds .
The vet who called said she thinks he’s fabulous and you wouldn’t know there was anything wrong
I’m not getting my hopes up as the other hospital managed to get it to stop , and then it started again . But at the moment it’s positive .
I can’t fault this hospital . They are giving him and his mum 5star care . Mum is now on buckets of mash as her poos were getting a bit hard .

Just had the update I was hoping for .
They have scanned his abdomen this morning and the hole has nearly gone .
We had some dripping yesterday , but non since . So for now surgery is on hold . He will have one more session tomorrow and after that we wait and hope it stays sealed .
He was a right little you know what yesterday . Threatened to rear at me , but can’t blame him as he’s been cooked up in a stable for nearly a week . He had his first telling off . I know he will be so much better when he can go out !

A new foal has been born where Mylo now is. They say foals are leggy, but seeing them side by side like this makes you realise just how 'all leg' they are.
My friend's brood mare is also there. Was covered last year but didn't take.... Allegedly. She is looking mighty round!

May be a nice surprising bun in the oven after all....
