those of you that have turned your horses out for the summer, what do you do if it rains? do you leave them out and be cruel like me? or do you bring them back in or rug them?
mine have shelters, or, if not, they have a summerweight amigo rug on at night, and i bring them in if it rains hard and is cold. summer showers are fine, obv!
I have to be honest that I either rug or bring them in - I've got two prissy warmbloods who are a bit prima donna like and hate to be wet and they get cold at the drop of a hat!
thanks i'm not cruel then. my boy is the only one out tonight at the yard, the rest have all brought them in. he is fat as a pudding so he could do with losing some to keep warm.
Only kidding, I leave him out. If I know its going to be really heavy I occasionally put his rainsheet on, but he has not had it on so far this summer. He actually seems to like the rain, if it starts to rain it takes me a while to catch him, when its dry he comes straight in!
Mine stay out, but they have access to their stables 24/7 with full straw beds, they actually use them all the time for sleeping in and rush in at the slightest drop of rain lol!
Have been leaving mine out because although it has been wet it is still warm and they dry quickly anyway! Have put their lightweight turnout rugs on though when it has rained heavily!
My mare lives out all year round although she is rugged in the winter........so she stays out without a rug on in the summer and it rains, she does have access to a field shelter but only uses it in the very very worst of weather - her choice not mine!
Both of mine are naked. One is a TB, the other an IDxWB. They are both fine. Although I will put a rug on my TB if the rain is heavy and persistent. My yard owners horses are rugged up in light weight combos every night and brought in if it is raining!
She's out naked unless its really heavy rain that going to set in for the day and its windy, then she'll just have a summer sheet on. My girl hasn't had a rug on for about 3 weeks now, she loves it
