I am selling a renault master horsebox, and i`ve been told by vosa that i can uprate it easily to 3.9 ton.

My question is, will there be a greater demand for it as a 3.9t?
It will increase the payload to 1600kg

The downside is - It will limit it to being driven by people who passed the driving test before 1997.

yes, in short anything over 3.5tn requires the catogory C1 on a licence. any licence after 1997 doesnt have it.

Whilst the uprate may be easy, I'm not sure that it would make your horsebox more salable - which is what you're after.

On the benefit side it increases the payload available and would certainly make carrying 2 horses and kit more feasible.

On the downside, the vehicle would then need to be tested annually by VOSA either at a test station or DP or ATF, those tests will be more expensive than the test for a 3.5 tonne vehicle. Although not a problem for you, the purchaser may find their use of the vehicle falls into the world of EU drivers hours rules and tachographs and operator licensing. A 3.5 tonne vehicle is exempt from this legislation. As has already been pointed out, a driver will need to have a C1 licence.

Perhaps it's something you could make any potential purchasers aware of and let them decide.

I would imagine that people who want a 3.5t do so because they don't want to upgrade their license and are prepared to compromise on payload because there is no one solution for all these issues.

People who can drive over 3.5t have a huge selection of lorries and personally I would go with a 5t or 6t lorry with a more generous payload than 1.6t.

I agree, but there seems to be a shortage of lorries between 3.5 and 7.5. I thought this might be a good option for people who want the benefits of the 3.5 type, but with the extra payload.

Maybe just say in the advert that you are willing to upgrade it to 3.9 if required. Do you have any pics?
