Hello,

I was wondering where I can find the weight limits of horses for the 3.5t Renault Masters box, I'm looking to hire one for 2 horses, 16.1hh medium weight ISH Sports horse and a more chunky 16.2hh horse. Will this box be suitable? Is there another 3.5ton suitable if not anyone can suggest??

Becuase the payloads for these vary so much your best bet is to ask the hire company how much it actually weights with a full tank of fuel and driver

You can then deduct that weight from the GVW (usually 3500 kgs) which leaves you the payload

Remember you need to add all the weights you will be putting in it not just the weight of the horses

I am pretty sure you will have far too much weight in any 3.5t with those two. I have a non coachbuilt Master with a payload of 1250kg (which is high for a Master) and I only ever take my 15.2 middleweight and something lighter than her as with tack and a passenger I would be pushing it otherwise. The coachbuilt ones (which you would need for horses that tall) have less payload (the ones on my yard do anyway) as the larger back adds weight I think. I may be wrong, but think you will need a bigger lorry to carry 2 big horses - sorry not the answer you wanted :-(

I very much doubt you will be within the limit, but the company you are hiring it from should be able to tell you the payload.
I have a 3.5t one and we took mine to the weighbridge fully laden with driver and full to the brim with fuel, and everything in apart from the horses and tack and I was left with 960kg. I have travelled my 16.2hh and my 13.3/14hh pony together, but it was only for transporting from A to B so had no tack or any other equipment in and I even took the spare wheel out so I knew I would be within my limit.

Its my mum that will be driving (she got her licence before 1997... not sure what that means she is and isn't allowed to drive... )

I had one of those I weighed it and there was a 1.2 payload so with 2horses and me there wasn't any left over weight for anything else, you are given a leeway if you are pulled over which I think is 5% overall, I used to regularly carry 2 on mine no issue at all but wouldn't take passengers at the same time.

A friend of mine has one of these and took it to a weigh bridge with herself, a friend and her. 15.2 mare inside as well as some odd bits of tack, but not a saddle. They were only just under the 3.5t limit. These might be stalled for two but rarely is it legal to carry two in them. Sorry.

As MUM has a pre 1997 licence then deffo hire a 5 tonnes+ horsebox or a two horse trailer

If its a trailer and you have a B licence then you might be allowed to drive it with Mum but that would need checking with the hire company for trailer insurance purposes

SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.
All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.
The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner

I have a 3.5 tonne box with a payload of just over 1100kg. You will not get one that has enough payload to take your two horses, plus say two people, diesel etc. If you hire one that has lockers, a small living and any additional extras, the payload could be as little as 800kg.
