Does anyone have a 3.5t box with a reasonable payload? I am considering getting one. I have a 16hh TB/Hanoverian weighing approx 500kg, and would mostly travel with just her, however would like the option of a friend coming with me (up to 16.2hh??). Is this possible, does anyone else successfully carry two reasonably sized horses without going overweight?

You'll be looking at roughly a max load weight of around 1200kg for a box that size, so by the time you put both horses on, plus tack, water, riders, fuel you could well be over weight.
If you can take the lorry to a public weighbridge with a full tank of fuel, tack, water riders etc and get it weighed, you'd be suprised how heavy it ill be before you put the horses on.

When I was looking 1.1 was average, I saw very few 1.2 and if they advertised it they didnt have a weighbridge cert to prove it.

I spoke to vosa and they said they give you a 5% margin if you are pulled in on your overall making around 175kg leeway before you get fined, but then safety has to also be considered. Most 16ish hands are half a tonne a piece so doesnt leave anything really for a passenger or tack, haynets etc.

I have an Equitrek sonic, which was sold to me as being able to carry 2x 16.2hh easily, but it most certainly wont. I can't even carry my boy (550-600kg) and a friend or my little mare (400kg) plus all tack water etc without going overweight. Very annoyed at equitrek now. I'm looking into doing my HGV liscence and buying a 7.5tonner as would like (in the future) to have another bigger horse to compete alongside Monty and with this I can't do it. My advise would be to weigh up how much weight you would have at max, remembering people too aswell as tack etc and see what payload you need before you buy.

xx

P.s I love my equitrek, just pissed as it was mis-solded. Lovely to drive!

Hi,
I have owned my Marlborough Hunter for two years now and am a complete convert to these smaller 3.5 lorries.

I did a lot of research and generally found the marlborough hunter to have a reasonable payload and have recently been weighed at an event, fully laiden with a 16.2 eventer (weighing 585) two passengers and all kit for eventing including full tank of fuel and water carriers, plus one slightly tubby labrador and still had 750 kg spare capacity.

Although, I have recently met with SvTech Ltd who promote the upgrading systems and the owner did say there is normally due to uneven ground etc at events a 10-15 % margin of error, but that would still give me enough spare capacity to carry another horse if I needed to.(although perhaps not full kit and extra passenger - may have to leave tubby labrador at home!)

I think alot of folk driving around in their horseboxes would be surprised if they actually went to weighbridges and found out exactly what their capacity for carry is and many would discover that they are over loaded most of the time!!

It is a bit of a mine field out there, but apart from a few teething problems with the Marlborough I am delighted and all my horses load and travel well in it.

good luck hope this helps x
