Just wondering who if anybody has ever owned a mare whose even come close to this. Waiting on my mare who went 372 last time and doesn't look (at 355) anywhere near. Most of my friends also have mares seeming to go at around a year. I'm just wondering where the 341 came from in the first place and if there has ever been a truly comprehensive survey done to find out an average.

I had one mare who went 340 every time and she always foaled at about 10 p.m. Another mare always foals one or two weeks early.

Usually if they are very late it is a colt though I had one mare who was covered once and was due mid April and she foaled June 9th and that was a filly.

Guess the mares have never read the books!

Serenity 341, 343 - she is a treasure - I think she has read the books.

Taggert 360, 359 - longer if she thinks you're looking! I spent 18 nights in my Honda City - very small! waiting for the last foal which was called Elusive because I never thought she would arrive.

And.... another night of no sleep and tummy rubs for mare. Sounds to me though from reading the posts that if she went 372 last time then she's likely to again which will put me at the end of the month.:eek:

343 days is an AVERAGE of gestation. Anything 3 weeks either side is absolutely 'normal' (321-364 days) and foals born outside that range are 'early' or 'late'.

With about 14 mares foaling each year I find 3 or 4 foal within a couple of days of the 343 - this year the earliest was 323 and the latest was 354.

To quote a man who saw hundreds of foals, "theres only one rule with mares and that is that there are no rules with mares!" early or late they will suit themselves. we had six here this year the earliest was 328 and the latest was 372 and all were fine tg.
