Hiya having admitted that my current 50g does not fit (& has never really if I’m honest) I’m attempting to wade through the vast selection avaliable to find something that will work without selling a kidney! Is for a Highland so he’s a bit of a chunk with a thick neck.

Ideally would like at least 1200D as he’s a thuggy thing (plus he’s out 24/7 with only natural shelter so need the waterproofness). A detachable neck would be a bonus but tbh I probably won’t use one most of the time, just useful for if I need to keep him clean for any reason.

Amigo XL seem to fit ok but as far as I’m aware they’re not available in that weight & as far as I’m aware they don’t make a liner in that weight either. I think Premier Equine would also likely fit ok but I know they’re super heavy when wet plus they seem to be getting ever more spendy to buy!

Ideally not wanting to splash more than £100 as no doubt he’ll do his best to kill it & I don’t want to cry when he does 😂

Been debating Gallop Trojan but unsure if chest will be big enough and looked at big horse shop but his size seems to be OOS. Oh & deffo don’t want Swish or Ruggles as had bad experiences with both in past in terms of stitching quality & waterproofing.

I have the big horse 0fill and a 50g liner (xl size not regular) It is big. It’s actually verging on too big on my 16.2 cob/clyde but fine with the liner. It’s quite heavy itself so if you struggle to lift them beware! I also have a ruggles 50g and when H was fatter it was too tight, now he isn’t it’s actually okay. It’s lighter to lift than the big horse one.

Gallop are not great for wide chests in my experience.

Swish do some fab rugs including 50g, neck is fully detachable and they do a wider fit too if you need it. Our Welsh fits them really well (standard size not the bigger horse version)

As above Swish & Ruggles are both a definite NO! The Swish rug I had was one of the worst quality rugs I’ve ever owned. The fit was awful, the fittings very poor quality, I had to sew a cross surcingle back on within a few weeks , it ripped easier than any other rug I’ve owned & it was only waterproof for a few months. I shan’t be giving them my money again. The Ruggles one I had was only slightly better in that it lasted a year rather than a few months. I shan’t be giving them my money again either!

Good to know that Gallop probably won’t work. Re Big Horse Shop I was considering them but they don’t have my horses size in stock in the weight I want & I kinda want the rug within the next few weeks. (Also ideally not looking for something super heavy)

Oh no I’m surprised about the swish one, I’ve always loved mine! Hmm have you tried shires highlander? They are a wider fit and can get detachable necks? I also have one of those and really like them!

Put a brand new no fill 1200d Gallop Trojan on my warmblood a few weeks ago and the metal snaps on the chest had split in half and popped open overnight, so sent it back. He's not got a huge chest but big shoulders.

Premier equine unfortunately the only ones that fit.

Westherbeeta rugs for me.

I've got a standard 0g gallop as a cheap backup and it's OK (600d). The gallop trojan xtra (1200d) were better fitting. I did have a chest clip burst too, but even with buying a packet of clips the rug worked out as a bargain.

I've got a QH and he's quite broad with a short thick neck if that helps re fitting.

I used Gallop rugs for my Westphalian Kaltblut (Draft) mare - built like a Shetland pony but 16hh. They fitted her better than they fit the current cob. I would recommend you try Gallop - and at least they are not expensive.

Just bought 2 Gallop 50g. One for IDxTB and one for IDxCob. Both with detachable necks.
They fit really well and am pleased with them so far. Definitely plenty of chest room. Cost £60 each.
Note, though, IDxCob is 6'3 in Weatherbeater and LeMieux but needs a 6x6 in Gallop.

Maxima Equestrian are good, and very reasonably priced. I've had mine for six years, still waterproof, still in perfect condition (although my HW cob is very careful of her rugs). It has become a bit of a mini skirt as she's evolved into her true Brick Outhouse form, so my warmer rugs are Big Horse, but still an effective rain sheet and plent of space round the neck.

Think I might order one of the mud rugs for a look, bits of the track get very grim when it’s wet & he literally CAKES his belly in mud even when clipped so the belly flap idea intrigues me.

Will probs look into either Shires Highlander or try a Gallop for size if not

Aaand the mud rug is going back! Actual fit of rug vaguely acceptable although it did feel to put a lot of pressure on the wither / sit a bit weirdly there which I’m not sure would have been great long term but belly flap roughly 2 sizes away from fitting (which if everything else had been perfect I’d just have ordered a bigger one), medium neck not wide enough & large neck way too long.

Also borrowed a 6ft3 & 6ft6 Shires Tempest to try and neither of them fit him. Unless the Highlander is a vastly different shape that’s them removed from the list!

Now to debate whether I try a Gallop Trojan (as it seems when I tried one before for reasons that I’m sure made sense at the time I tried a 6ft on so perhaps a 6ft3 actually would be ok?) or just order a Premier Equine for an easy life as I’m 99 percent sure it will fit (the thought of paying full price for one just makes me want to cry!)
