Debating it but I’ve been burned before buying second hand rugs that leak like sieves 😬. To make myself even more depressed I’ve just looked up what I paid for the last one I bought & I paid £115 for a rug that would now cost me £200 which is slightly insane (it was in a sale so a little reduced but still!). Aaaand I swear that my Buster rugs are all 1680D whereas they now appear to be 840D 🤨

I have simply trojan 50g turnouts for both my horses, they have had them on in the recent torrential rain and are warm & dry. My retired horse has a massive neck & chest and there's plenty of room, these are no neck jobs, I think I only paid about £37.00 for them, they aren't 1200d tho. I'm really pleased with them my horses live out most of the time.

Yes my horse fits Rambo optimo, big horse shop (but their lighter T/Os leak) and PE buster cut.

None cheap.

Oooor I’ve just twigged that PE do 50g rug liners so I could get a 50g liner & pray that it matches up with the fittings on my Amigo XL & finally buy the neck to go with that rug. I’d just be royally stuffed if he did rip that rug as my only other rug option would be the 100g PE which is technically a bit small as it was bought for previous horse. Which would then mean I’d need another spare no fill rug… *sigh*

I’m beginning to see why I’ve got into the habit of leaving him naked! (Really really can’t deal with the amount of mud he covers himself in if I’m trying to follow a strict rehab program though!)

IME Tempest and Highlander fit differently. Highlander has shoulder darts (& a better tail flap) so fits better across the chest but IMO it fits closer around the neck than Tempest. However I find the Tempest higher over the shoulders and chest because it doesn't have darts.

I think the neck is higher and snugger on Highlander. I prefer it to Tempest.

Gallop Trojan Xtra it's mine lower on the neck and has the advantage of shoulder darts and a good tail flap. Normal Gallop is togher over shoulders and chest with a looser neck.

Have decided to stop pratting about with things that may or may not fit & ordered the PE as I managed to knock £36 off it on eBay for brand new. Thank god for PayPal pay in 3! Most importantly it’s a different colour to his other rugs so I / the yard can tell them apart! If it doesn’t fit I will genuinely have a small breakdown!

My Sec D has a Gallop Trojan Xtra/Extreme, plenty of room 50g and 1200D it's now going into it 4th winter and still going strong and he's a bit of a monster on rugs as he plays so much 🤦‍♀️

Another vote for Gallop rugs. The Trojan 1200 denier is great for my 17hh WB and was suitable for Bailey who was a 17.1hh broad chested WB too.

Here is the smug creature in his new rug. Still think the neck could do with being a smidge wider in an ideal world (I mean I can fit my entire arm down the front but maybe I was just used to the Welsh creature having enough room for two in there!) but there’s enough adjustment in the Velcro that it’s ok for how often I’ll use it (ie a few times a month) and the actual rug fits ok (with the surcingles let alllll the way out!)

He looks very cute.

PE annoyingly didn’t fit my cobs shoulders.

I bought a cheap second hand bigger sized neck off eBay.

Shires Highlander is far roomier than Shires Tempest or their other turnouts - try laying different models on top of each other to compare fit, quite a bit of difference.
The Highlander Plus is a thicker denier, with BOTH trigger clips AND adjustable buckles at the chest, excellent for cresty necked, wide chested, cold bloods. Good rugs, well cut, rarely ever slip, and durable.
The Highlander Original is the same pattern, a lighter denier, and this model HAD traditional, strap-&-buckle fastenings at the chest (plenty of adjustment, these were absolutely fine); however, the latest Highlander Original models now have two large breast clips instead - very bad move!
Recently bought one of these (50g, Ocean Blue colour), and discovered it’s too damn tight....
Luckily the shop swapped it for their older stock (same size, but with the original strap-&-buckle, chest fastenings), which is ideal, particularly since all this rain....
So, either opt for the Highlander Plus with more adjustment, or find a retailer still stocking the Highlander Original with strap-&-buckles breast fastening, the ‘dated’ design.
Gallop Trojan are roomy, but tend to drag back, altho that’s not such a problem in the lighter weights;
Fal Pro 40g Vikings - fab if you can ever find one.

Got to update this - a good friend has had same experience with the latest model Shires Highlander Plus - which rugs also now only now have the two breast clips, and no longer have sufficient room for deep-chested horses.
Seemed a tight fit, but she turned horse out, thinking probably just the fabric being new and stiff, and having successfully used multiple ‘Highlanders’ in various weights over the years.
Following day - badly rubbed fur, and saddler has since had to alter the breast fastenings on her brand new rug.
So, track down the OLDER models of ‘Highlander’ for the big-fronted ones!
Avoid Shires’ newest ones, with conspicuous reflective stripes; voluminous tail flaps (which tend to drag rugs backwards, beats me how this is any improvement?); and two breast clips with minimal adjustment.
And perhaps forget brand loyalty?
