Firstly a huge thank you to everyone who replied to my thread after we lost Rosie earlier this week, your words helped enormously. Reflecting on things, does anyone know the poem 'When I am old, I shall wear purple' or something like that, about growing old disgracefully, that was Rose!! :). Now, it was always our plan to get another dog when we lost Rose so that Chloe, who will be 1 on the 31st Jan, has a companion not too far apart in age, the Smurph is 10 and not a great playmate! I have spoken to Chloes breeder and she has some suitable pups at the moment, not quite ready to leave but thats OK. Now. Chloe had a tendency to try and dominate Rosie, who completely blanked her and walked away, but is completely submissive with Smurph(castrated male). My preference is for another little girl but is there a strong possibility we could be asking for trouble? Does it follow that Chloe may be difficult with a younger bitch or could it simply have been a clash of personalities, not sex related as such. Anyone have any experience or insight into the doggy mind, obviously cannot afford to get this wrong and upset the balance.

we had 2 bitches and a dog....

dog was 10 (time we got pup) and bitch was 8....

the new pup was a bitch (by name and nature)

pup submitted 100% to the dog and fought like mad with the bitch.

so for me id always have 2 dogs and a bitch.... never ever 2 bitches again

some peoples get on really well - guess its down to the character.... but for me no way id ever have 2 bitches again!!!

ets;;; we ended up loosing the middle bich to a stroke.... (she was top dog), then the dog took over the pup, he wasnt aggresssve just put her in her place... as she was constantly trying to take over!

since then we lost the oldest dog (he was almost 14) to a tumour, and now we have one, and its stayin gthat way for another 2 years when i want a spangle dog!...

I have nothing constructive to say as our dogs have always 'chosen' us so as they have been rescues of one kind or another but we have never had any problems with then settling in the 'pack' after possibly a couple of 'reminders' to the pecking order:)

Whatever you decide we will of course need the obligatory piccies:D

PS my old spangle was the naughtiest she had been in years in the last two weeks she was here:rolleyes:

I have never had more than 2 dogs, so I cannot help with your choice, but they say bitches are more loving and dogs are more sensitive.
If that helps in any way shape or form!

Hi,

Is your older male dog friendly with other male dogs etc... if so id recommend that you get a dog. If Chloe was being dominant towards Rosie , likely hood is she willbe to a new bitch puppy. Although the puppy probably be submissive at first as she grows and finds her own strengths etc she may challenge Chloe and then you'll have two dogs competing for top dog ! Ive been in this situation with two sisters and it was a nightmare , i ended up having to rehome Lilli and that was a horrible day ! I now have the other bitch Kozi and her son and all calm is restored.... If you get a dog although he'll be submissive to start as he matures he should take the roll of top dog and Chloe will automatically know her place without having to challenge it. This has been my experience anyway. Good luck with what you decide x

I would always go for another bitch, in your circumstances though I'm not sure there is a right or wrong answer! Have whichever you want. As long as they all know they are below you and you dont let overly dominant behaviour emerge between any of them (the older dogs will naturally put the pup in his/her place occasionally). Bitches are more dominant than dogs, I would expect Chloe to emerge top dog whether you choose a bitch or dog. Just dont choose the top pup of the litter (ie the one thats constantly necking its siblings and is first to greet you, first to food etc.) this would be a naturally more dominant pup and is more likely to cause some issue with Chloe as it matures. My dogs dont particularly have a pecking order I dont think. Nobody squabbles or challenges each other though, they just accept I'm at the top and they are all somewhere below.

I have to say this is one reason I prefer to get rescues - you can let your dogs meet them and see if they get on before you commit to taking them on. Not that that helps you very much but I would probably go with Vizslak's advice on picking one lower down the pecking order whichever sex you choose

i had a bitch whippy for three years before i got another bitch whippy..they got on great..abit of disagreement now and again for bones but that was it even when they came in season, they were fine
we lost the older bitch 2009..april 2010 we got another whippy bitch...with no problems best of buddies
never had males so cant comment on mix sexes
was told dogs are more biddable and loving, bitches are more independant(there is some truth in that imo)
