A friend has an Arab who had a tendancy to bite, not over the stable door but when being tacked up/rugged etc - it was an ex trekking centre pony so maybe had been a little thoughtlessly treated in the past? - and she had tried as many things as she could think of to stop him biting, shouting, hitting, saying nothing etc etc.

Then someone advised her to go completely mental if he did it again, don't touch him but jump up and down, scream, flail arms around, as mad as she could get! She tried this (luckily she did warn the rest of us liveries first!) and the horse was suitably shocked to the core. He tried to bite just once more, a few days later, she did the same thing... hey presto, seven years later, he still doesn't bite.

Worth a try...

LOL!! I am going to try that on one of my mares!!! She'd love it I'm sure!

She never bites, but she does grind her teeth and give me "evils" when I very slowly and very gently tie up her cinch. I think she will think I am funny if I do this - tomorrow! I'll let you know what she does.

Tia - we've got a mare in our stables just the same! She's a right cow!

I think she'd hate us even more if we did that though!

Oh no, mine is lovely - the minute you stop doing her cinch up she turns around with her ears pricked forward and kisses you. She's sweet really but boy when she scowls....she REALLY scowls.

Monty Robert's reckon to give a horse a dig in the shins when it's going to bite. I know it's hard to do on horse who's in their stable.

I did it to Super - not for biting but for pawing the ground. We were at a show and there was a horse tied up and it was pawing the ground so Super thought it was a great idea! So I stood at her head and when she went to paw - dig in the shins! She jumped and didn't know what had happened! Again, she lifted her leg and boom another dig. I watched as she went to lift her leg again, thought about it and put it back down. Touch wood she han't pawed the ground since!

I suppose it's all association really.
