Hi
I'll try not to make this too long...

A friend of mine had someone out to do Bowen therapy on their horse as the horse was stiff, uneven wear in his shoes, plus other symptoms, basically all indidcating a problem with his hips. The bowen therapist come out 3 times to treat the horse, which isnt cheap.. the horse had risen energy levels, but was still stiff..

I decided to have my horse checked over by the same person, as i wanted to check his back was all ok as i was also having a new saddle fitted etc, so wanted to make sure everything was ok. My horse has had 2 treatments now. the person fitting the saddle also checked my horses back and said said he was not in pain with his back even though he drops away more on one shoulder than the other, which may improve with the new saddle anyway.

the thing is my friend with the horse has since had an osteopath out to see their horse and they have discovered that the horse has a twisted pelvis!! and is now being put right by the osteopath.
My dilemma is.. that shouldnt the Bowen person picked up on something as major as that?? I feel for my friend who has obviously shelled out hard earned money with not much of a result, and i'm now doing the same, and now wondering if i should cancel the two other treatments my horse is due to have... i dont want to appear to be dismissive of Bowen or anything, but then i dont believe on chucking money down the drain if i thought she wasnt benefitting from it... i dont know how to cancel my appointments without sounding negative about it.... errr help?!

I think the Bowen person should have picked up on it. A few years ago I had a chiropractor look at my horse and he said she had a problem with her withers. As she didn't improve with his treatment I eventually had her referred to the Royal Dick, where she was diagnosed with degeneration of the sacro-iliac which he hadn't picked up on at all. I still use a physio/back man who I think is excellent, but I have no faith in this particular chiropractor. If your not happy using the Bowen practitioner then cancel it - say your skint and can't afford it! Horses ae expensive enough, and there is no point spending money on something you are not convined is of any benefit to your horse.

Bowen person should definately have picked that up. I'd ask for my money back!!

I sort of know what you mean. I had a lady 3 times to my 4 year old because I felt that he was "twisted". I just felt that something was wrong and he held his tail to one side. Anyway, all the time she said there was no obvious problem. He passed a 5 stage vetting when I sold him 4 mths ago. The new owners have contacted me to say that they had a back person out because he was so lethargic and "slow" (the reasons I sold him) and she said he was carrying an old "severe" injury that he must have sustained as a youngster. Go with your instincts. I KNEW there was something not right with my lad. Apparently he will be ok after a course of treatment, thank goodness. What a shame, he had been in pain for so long he just "got on with it".

I only have the physio my vet recommends to check the horses. Had a McTimoney once - total waste of time and money. Cancel the next two appointments and get your vet to recommend a physio.
