I have invested in various easy wash throws for everyday so I can enjoy a cuddle with my dogs and the same on my bed. They don't eat off my plates (thats a yeuch from me) though!

Collie is absolutely not allowed on the furniture (though he does occasionally hop up when he thinks no-one is looking... darts down and behind a sofa with a guilty expression if caught). That's what his bed and the numerous rugs around the house are for.

My dog has her bed, I have my sofa. Works well! In our old place the pampered pooch had her bed, her beanbag and always managed to slink onto the sofa if you gave in to her little puppy dog eyes. And as for when visitors stayed, she walked all over them - literally, til she hogged the entire sofa!!
Since we moved to a house with heating, she is happy to stay in her bed, and although not best pleased with 'no sofa' she is coping well. After all, we have carpets now, so she can spread out!
Beds are a no-no, and even when I caught her on the kids bed once, she stayed so still like a soft toy, I couldn't tell her off! How spoilt is that!!?!

the dogs live in the kitchen but when they ARE allowed in the front room they're straight on the settee rottie has always done it (there's a small chance that when he was little and i cuddled him on the sofa, i told mum it was just for tonight...) and lab was banned for 9 years and is now allowed because he's an old man

i understand why working dogs might live outside but am a bit unclear as to why anyone would have a pet dog that isn't allowed in the house - please explpain cos i am interested
& how do those who have no dogs on furniture rules know that the dogs obey the rules when you go out?

Our dogs have always been outside, just the way we have done it. We've always had big dogs and lived in small bungalows, they've all (apart from one) liked being outdoorsy dogs and they do come in sometimes, just not all the time. The one that didn't like being outside was rehomed to an indoors family. Horses for courses

No dogs on furniture or upstairs. They have always had their own bed. I do not want my visitors covered in dog hairs or my bed smelling. For those who think that it doesn't your misguided. I would never let my dog eat or drink from my plate or cup. If I see a dog drinking out of a cup anywhere I visit I would politely refuse any offer of a drink. I'm not stuck up I just think it revolting.

Mine are allowed on the sofas with the understanding that they move immediately if a human wants to sit there. Everything is covered with washable throws and hot washed frequently; they shed in such quantity that the sofas would be covered in hair whether they went on them or not. We don't have guests (because we are anti social, not because of the hair ).

Not in our house. The pleasure of sitting on the sofa in the evening, dog's head resting on my lap, holding a glass of wine in one hand and idly stroking the furry body with the other, is so restful.
All the stresses and demands of the day, drift away, as my faithful, honest companions sleep beside me.

Totally agree - as long as there are throws on my sofa's and bed then I don't mind. Wash them often and remove when guests come and there's no problem

The first rule of keeping companion breeds is that they be allowed wherever you are. *And* they come in handy as sofa accessories--the pug's tush makes a fine foot cushion, and the Boston provides elbow support--and when space needs to be created, they are easily air-lifted to ground level/nudged with feet to create room

I do let my dogs on the sofa/chair, and Millie does sleep in my bed occasionally (Suzy sleeps on her duvet next to the bed. They are only allowed upstairs when i'm in the house though so the cat has her 'space' during the day away from the gruesome twosome!

While they're allowed on the furniture, they have learnt that they move when they are told!

Plus look how cute they are!

Glad most people are taking this in the light-hearted spirit is was intended. I'll come clean and say I'm an indoors (but no further than the utility annex which is basically a kitchen extension) and 'four paws on the floor', crate at night sort of person. But without her I'd be lost. She has love and attention in unlimited quantities and now she has some discipline and boundaries has become an endearing and well-mannered little treasure. She does get to sit 'up front and without restriction' when we go out in the lorry and although I would love, sometimes, a snuggle on the sofa, I would fear for her manners. 'House domination' was her undoing in her pre-rescue home, and I had some strict training to do with her, which I actually found harder to comply with than she did!

What sort of a sofa-surfer takes itself off to its outdoor emergency only kennelling when its indoor cosy crate is available?

poor betty is very hard done by... not allowed on the sofa or on the bed! she has a bed in the kitchen and one in the sitting room, and if she is upstairs (not very often) she goes under the bed- never on it!

last dog not on your life, well mine actually...
this dog not until 18 months to keep an eye on her after being spayed... now, well, same as Mollichops - throws on everything and washed often. (I just LOVE your dugs Mollichops!)

Mine is allowed on the sofa- but only by invite, and gets off as soon as I ask him. He is also allowed up on the bed when my hubby is on nights, or if I'm poorly (he snuggles up with me and won't move even for a walk, bless him).

Ok, second attempt! My daughter and I have six working dogs between us. Molly Springer, always sleeps on my bed and snores like mad! Lottie, the Golden Retriever, always sleeps with my daughter unless her lovely boyfriend stays! Sometimes, Pippa, the 11 month old Springador sleeps with daughter and sometimes Bryn, the Large Munsterlander sleeps with Molly Springer and I! Occasionally, Ruby and Libby, the Springer sisters - they're a double act!) sleep with me, too.

Needless to say, all are allowed on the sofa! Main problem is the tumbleweed hair which blows across the wooden flooring!

Pippa wasn't even born when these photos were taken!

New Husband has two DISGUSTING poodles - one toy and one standard, both of which sleep on the bed with Molly Springer (no problem) but I hate it when they growl at any of my dogs who approach the sofa when said disgusting poodles are invariable lying on it!
